Happy Inspiration + Fitspo Wednesday!

I hope you’re all having a great week so far – I’ve been feeling a bit sluggish where my weight loss goals are concerned so this post comes right on time for me. I swear it was like Negative Nancy all over the place for  me yesterday, but after working out and relaxing, I feel a bit better. Now I just want to get my eating back on track after my super indulgent birthday weekend so I’m getting back in the groove a bit this week.

For some reason, I have just been a bit down about the whole weight loss thing.

You know, you feel great and then all of a sudden you feel like all the doubts and negativity come around and punch you in the face. It’s seriously awful, but I am working through it and if you’re working through some crap like that, then feel free to email me or comment or whichever and we can all work through it together. Anyway, whatever your mindset or condition is this week, I hope this week’s Mid Week Fitspo + Inspiration help to keep you positive, happy, motivated, and mindful.

ASOS Tailored Dungarees

I’m not a huge fan of what ASOS calls Dungarees, but what I’d call overalls, though I really love  them tailored as they are above. I would totally wear that outfit because I love all things tailored. Perhaps it’s because I love the style of clothing from the early to mid 1900’s (think 1920s-1950s) and tailored clothing just reminds me of a time when ladies were proper and well mannered… or something. Not to say I don’t love modern times because I love having the right to vote and curse, but I guess tailored clothing all seems magical to this 90’s child. Even menswear has a certain mystique about it. Don’t believe me? Have your boyfriend put on a suit – doesn’t he seem even better looking than usual? You know I’m right 😉

Anyway, Here Are Some of My Favorite Tailored Styles. Some Are More Modern While Others Not so Much – I hope you enjoy!

Original Post ( where image was taken from: here )

Photoshopping images, retouching and other digital alterations have always been a sensitive subject for me. Not just because I find it to be counter-productive to completely alter the way someone looks, but also because it’s had a huge contribution on the way we, as women, see ourselves and others and personally, I’m tired of the brainwash.

Now, when I say photo shop, I don’t mean a few spots removed or color correction. I mean, body alteration from fat to thin ( or worse, thin to thinner ) and other “retouches” that literally change the way the person looks altogether. I don’t think there’s much wrong with minor retouching, but I do think there’s a huge problem with going overboard and that kind of thing seems to be the norm in the media.

As seen above, the retouching is obviously out of control, but what gets me is… why is the girl on the left considered more beautiful than the girl on the right? I know they are the same girl, and truthfully both are beautiful, but why do we consider the right to be superior? And more than that, why do the media think it’s okay to do alterations like this in the first place? Have we given them permission subconsciously and silently said to them, “We want thinner models. Thin is in.” ? Because I think they’re the ones creating this ideal, not us. Most of us are not the “ideal” and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, though media images might tell us otherwise.

Original Post: Celeb Photoshopping Before & After ( where image was taken from )

Aside from successfully (or so it may seem) convincing us that we are too fat, they’ve also seemingly convinced us that we are too old, wrinkly (word invention?), and ugly so we constantly feel inferior to the rich and famous, despite the fact that it’s now more or less public knowledge that many photos of celebs and models are doctored beyond recognition. I highly recommend checking out the above post from Love & Knuckles because there are tons of photos on there that will make you feel better about yourself and realize that, yes, celebs are actually still human like us. Yay!

Lastly, I would like to say that while I do think health and fitness are important for overall longevity and happy, healthy lives, I also think they are not the end all be all. And, try to ignore crap like BMI’s which really don’t have any actual standing on your fat percentage or health. Seriously. Look up the history of the term BMI and you will be shocked, but that’s for another day. On a last note, I also want to mention that, at least here in the USA, the government has even lowered optimal weight thresholds so that many who were not considered overweight before are now considered overweight. If you ask me, they’ve done it to fuel private interest groups like health food corporations and diet companies ( like weight watchers ) by convincing Americans we’re fatter than ever and we need their products. I’m not saying I don’t believe we need to eat healthier or even that we’re not overweight on a whole, but a crisis? I don’t know if I believe that one and you can learn more about the lowering of the weight threshold issue here. You can also check out several documentaries discussing this topic, if you like. Netflix has some good ones!

Hungry by Crystal Renn

Check this book out on Amazon – here.

Also, this really fantastic book that I recently read about world famous fashion model, Crystal Renn, is fantastic. In it, she discusses her own struggle with body image, weight, healthy eating and exercises, and the pressure of the media and her job. It is truly an excellent book for anyone, young or old, male or female – highly recommend it!

Another really good series that ponders on our ideas of beauty and body image in a less direct way, but is still really great is the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld. It’s one of my favorites!

Lastly, I hate to end on such a downer note so here are 5 ways to fight back against all the crap the media tries to put in our heads and why flipping the bird to them might be a good idea. 😉

Until my next rage-filled post about media, weight & all that crap, Viva La Resistance!

5 Reasons to Love Yourself Out of Sheer Rebellion

  1. Ignore the Status Quo & Just Be Yourself. Defying social norms, the status quo, whatever you want to call it really pisses people off and that’s kind of fun when you think about it. Seriously. I have always been kind of “off beat” when it comes to fashion and style, even as far back as grade school. In middle school, a popular girl once approached me asking “So, like, Tianna, what are you???” To which I responded – Hi I’m Tianna. I’m a person and a girl. Nice to meet you. To which she was left speechless. Trust me when I say this sort of attitude is awesome for throwing people off.
  2. Be Confident & Proud of It. As Marianne Williamson preaches, allowing yourself to be confident and shine will subconsciously allow others to do the same. So you will literally help others be more confident by being confident yourself. ( See the Marianne Williamson quote I’m talking about here. )
  3. Be Unique! Not that you aren’t already, but taking a stand against the “ideal” and being content in your own skin inadvertently makes you that much more unique and original. Certainly, we are all individuals, but this will make you stand out more.
  4. Blaze Your Own Trail. I feel like, as a people, we’re often obsessed with trends and even I’m guilty of this. I run a beauty blog and I love seeing and following new trends, but that being said, I also love doing my own thing. I was the 8th grader wearing my mom’s old clothes from the 1980’s before the 80’s look came back. I actually recall a “friend” telling me I should take it off, that I looked stupid. I can fondly remember seeing her in high school a few years later ( when the 80’s trend was in ) sporting all kinds of eighties looking outfits so that bee-yotch can SUCK IT! I was ahead of my time 😉 . The moral of the story? You don’t have to follow others to be cool. You can ave your own way and be your own kind of cool that isn’t cool yet. And who cares?
  5. Your Life Is Easier & Happier. Not only will you not care about starving yourself, you won’t feel the need to. You’ll be happier because you won’t waste time standing in your own way and preventing yourself from living life to the fullest and you also won’t be bothered or feel pressured by the unrealistic standards of the media so you’ll feel less stressed and more content.

So, that’s all for now. It’s certainly not all I have to say on the subject because that would be a hugely long post that could go on forever and I’d rather not keep you ( or bore you ) so I’ll save it for another day. For now, I just want to say, none of us is perfect and that’s just fine. It’s okay if you want to improve yourself, but make sure it’s in a healthy, productive and realistic way that doesn’t involve self harm or hate because, in the end, it’s just not worth it despite what the media tells you.

What are your thoughts on this topic?

I’d love to chat with you in the comments!

Back before I ever met my boyfriend, I often celebrated Valentine’s Day with friends since I was single and we came up with so many fun ideas which made Valentine’s Day a fun day of friendship instead of a day of moping around.

Not that you need to mope around either way, but here are some fun ideas my friends and I came up with as ways to celebrate this hallmark holiday if you’re single and a few more if you’re in a relationship.

{ Have A Gift Swap! }

I think a big part of what makes V-Day so depressing for a lot of singles is the idea that you won’t have anyone to gift swap with so you won’t feel loved or special. When I was single, my good friend and I would always swap gifts for fun because we didn’t have anything else to do and we really wanted to avoid the whole blind dating scene (like, at all costs).

{ Enjoy Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner with Friends! }

So, to continue on with the whole gift swap idea, you can also plan to have dinner together where you can swap said gifts. My friend and I would always meet up on V-Day, whether it was for lunch or dinner or whichever, to eat, swap our gifts and enjoy the day our way. I know a lot of people think you have to be in a relationship to enjoy this little hallmark holiday, but I totally disagree. I actually think it’s a bit more fun to celebrate V-Day as a single girl than it is to celebrate in a relationship (Just don’t tell my boyfriend I said that!). The fun in this is you can choose a fun place you’ll both enjoy and there’s no awkwardness that you often get on those blind dates! The only thing is I advise you to make reservations if you’re doing dinner, otherwise it’s like a cattle call waiting in line for a table. Another thing is avoid really franchise or super popular places as many restaurants add in tables on V-Day in order to make more money (more seats = more couples = more $$$), but you’ll literally be inches away from the next table. One year, my boyfriend and I made the mistake of going to dinner at a popular local restaurant and we were so close to the next table, we could hear their entire conversation and smell their cologne. Thankfully, my boyfriend and I seem to find it hilarious to eavesdrop on the conversations of others, especially if they happen to be on an awkward first date or if they get in a fight. Drama!

{ DIY Gifts! }

If the idea of spending a lot of money on a gift swap stresses you out, it’s always a great idea to suggest that everyone gives DIY gifts instead of spending money on expensive ones. I really feel like there’s an adorable kind of charm when it comes to DIY Valentines and cards, especially, because they have cute character and always seem to be much more creative than store bought ones anyway.You can even trade baked goods, which I think is even more fun and personal!

{ Host a Party or Go Shopping! }

I’ve never personally hosted a V-Day party, but all the pink and red and hearts seems like tons of fun, especially if you theme the food to fit the holiday! Enjoy lots of goodies and chick flicks or you can do an Anti – V – Day themed party and serve stuff in a pink, black and white theme and show horror films – Just an idea! 😉 On another thought, when my friend and I would go out to dinner, we’d always end up at Ulta or Sephora afterwards, for some reason, and that seemed to become an unintentional tradition of ours. I think if you’re a single girl out with your girl friends, it’s always a fun idea to end with retail therapy and it’s less likely you’ll deal with too much traffic if you’re avoiding the restaurant scene!

{ Some Ideas for Couples }

  • Stay In & Make Dinner At Home. Eating out can be so expensive and read above about the possible seating arrangements! Sometimes it’s a lot easier and special to enjoy your Valentine’s Day lunch or dinner in. Whoever offers to cook will be giving a totally priceless gift otherwise you can coordinate a team effort where you both cook different dishes for the meal.
  • Enjoy a Weekend Getaway ( somewhere nearby). Groupon and TravelZoo are always offering very affordable rates and depending on your area, there should be some local getaway spots that are an hour to a few hours away which you can enjoy without breaking the bank. I’ve seen some under $100 for a 2 night stay in my area alone so check it out!
  • Tea Time Valentines. This is something I’d like to do this year with my boyfriend because 1. I’ve never been to a proper tea shop where they serve pastries and all that stuff and 2. I may or may not be living out my own Madame Pudifoot’s Tea Shop fantasy. Don’t judge! One bonus is you can totally avoid the dinner rush of V-Day by doing this!
  • Go to a Theme Park. Personally, I’m always up to visit Disneyland anytime, anywhere, but depending on where you are, there may not be a local theme park and that’s fine because there’s always museums, art galleries, and other fun attractions to see which you can tailor to yours and your S.O.’s tastes.
  • Restaurant Crawl. If you’ve never tried this before, you really ought to! Basically, what you do is enjoy each part of your meal at a different restaurant. You start out with drinks at one, appetizers at another, main courses at another and dessert at another. I recommend planning out your spots ahead of time and making reservations accordingly, but it’s a fun and less conventional way to celebrate, try new things and enjoy new food!
  • Enjoy a Movie Night In. A few years back, my boyfriend and I made the grave mistake of thinking we could go watch a film on V-Day and were met with a literal FLOOD of couples all waiting to see Valentine’s Day (you know, that film). Thankfully we went to watch some kind of thriller instead, but the line itself made it the whole thing kind of taxing in itself.
  • 14 Days of Valentine Gifts. I’ve been thinking on doing this one, but I think it’ll have to wait until next year because I’m short handed on cash, at the moment. For those of you who have money or who would prefer to DIY your gifts, this is a fun idea to avoid the rush of one day. It’s quite simply that you and your S.O. plan to gift each other every day from February 1st to Valentine’s Day. They can be small gifts or whichever and the last should be extra special.

I hope you’ve found these ideas helpful and fun and I wish you a fun Valentine’s Day!

SteamCream Xmas Tins

Happy Friday Everyone!

I hope you’ve all had a lovely week & on to another fabulous weekend!

For some reason, I’ve just been exhausted this week and staying up a bit too late doing random things like attempting to make ice cream (weird for winter, I know) and creating a yogurt pie (because it needed to be done).  So I’ll be pulling the covers over my head til Sunday, getting in some much needed sleep this weekend, but on to today’s post!

Joy to The World

Joy to The World

I’ve been in love with the beautiful tins from Steamcream ever since they sent me a sample of Chagrin earlier this year (see my review on that – here) and I’ve been fawning over their Christmas themed tins along with all of their other tin designs which are all brilliant and uniquely scented! Their creams are very precisely steam-infused with a variety of essential oils, natural plant oils and a calming infusion of oatmeal which offers a very unique cream for even the most sensitive skin types. What I really love about their tins (other than their impressive ingredients) is that they have lovely designs on them that are cute, unique and fun and the tins screw closed instead of most creams which come in a tin that you have to push together and which become harder and harder to open as time goes on. Their tins shut tightly and can safely roll around in your bag without worry of them spilling everywhere.

Chagrin  and Brugge Gift Set

Chagrin and Brugge Gift Set

Single Steamcreams would make lovely stocking stuffers and they also offer a number of adorably designed gift sets for those looking for a fully fledged gift. Aside from that, they are also eco friendly, made with sustainable ingredients, and they are vegan, cruelty free, and use recycled materials for their packaging. As if that’s not enough, they also hand craft their Steamcreams fresh in the UK and Japan with minimal preservatives for the most body friendly skin emulsion that’s instantly absorbed into the skin!

Some of their tins and gift sets seem to be on sale at the moment so definitely take advantage of that while you can!

They offer tons of uniquely designed tins in their online shop – here.

If you’re in the US, you can also get them from Beauty Habit, if you like – here.

Have you tried SteamCream?

What are you getting your friends and family for Christmas?
