8 Beauty Picks for Earth Day

Troubled Skin Serum With Frankincense and Tamanu

Troubled Skin Serum With Frankincense and Tamanu

This Troubled Skin Serum from Rainwater Botanicals is one of my favorites for treating acne, but better yet is the fact that all Rainwater Botanicals products are super affordable (some are $10 or less), produced in the USA from organic and wild crafted ingredients, and they use recycled packaging and sustainable materials. They have loads of products that I love and you can learn more about them in a post I did here.

The Problem Solver Face Mask

The Problem Solver Mask by May Lindstrom is my favorite face mask to date and with good reason – it’s made with all natural ingredients including cacao, bamboo charcoal, and various natural minerals and clays so it literally comes from the earth. Also, all of the products by May Lindstrom come in reusable glass containers so there’s no plastic waste. Aside from the fact that it’s completely naturally formulated, this face mask works seriously well at clearing, calming, and toning the skin. It’s better than any mask I’ve tried yet. You can see my review for it here. Aside from this mask, they also have other fantastic products including The Good Stuff Radiance Oil which is amazing for getting that dewy glow look. You can see a post I did on how to use it here.

Karen Murrell lipsticks are some of the most sustainable lip products I’ve ever seen. They have some serious high standards set to them and they’ve really held up against them. The lipstick containers themselves and the packaging are all made with biodegradable, recycled or plant materials. The lipstick tube itself starts biodegrading back to the earth in 100 days which is something I’ve never heard of for any product let alone a lipstick. The lipsticks as products are not only extremely hydrating, but they smell amazing and have lovely, trendy colors that look great on any skin tone. I actually haven’t met a KM lippie I didn’t like. They are cruelty free, sustainable, locally sourced and traceable, ECOCERT, green house gas neutral, and made with all natural and organic ingredients. They are my favorite HG lipsticks. You can see the original post I did on them here.

Konjac Sponges are make facial cleansing simple, clean and green. They’re made from konjac, a kind of potato found in Japan, and various clays so they are entirely biodegradable. In fact, after a few months they actually begin to fall apart and literally degrade. They work really well to cleanse and soften skin without stripping it of it’s natural oils while also brightening, gently exfoliating and calming. Plus, they’re super cheap at only $9 each. You can see my original post on them here.

The Suti Cleanse Organic Balm is, hands down, the best cleansing balm I’ve ever tried. It’s super hydrating, cleansing, calming, and doesn’t clog pores. It comes with a muslin cloth so you can even use it to gently exfoliate skin without drying it out or irritating it. Made with all organic plant oils and butter, this balm can be used as a cleanser, moisturizer, face mask and exfoliant. The balm is made with a certified organic formula and comes in a reusable glass jar. You can see my original post on it here.

Bamboo 6 Piece Brush Set

ECO Tools have some amazing brushes and they’re super sustainably made from bamboo and other sustainable materials. They work really well for applying makeup and even skincare products. I’ve used their smaller eye brushes to apply eye cream before and that works really well. Also, their shower gloves are amazing as well for body exfoliation.

Travel Set

Living Nature products are some of the best natural products I’ve tried. They offer a wide range of skincare and cosmetic products which are all really nice. They use exotic ingredients found in New Zealand and other naturally sustainable plant oils and extracts in order to soothe, hydrate and heal skin. I love how gentle their products are and they can definitely be used on any skin type, including sensitive. You can see my original post on their products here.

Antonia Burrell‘s Natural Glow Cleansing Oil is the best cleansing oil I’ve found for acne prone skin types, but it will definitely work well for any other skin type as well. It’s very gentle, calming and nourishing without being heavy. Aside from that, it comes in a reusable glass jar, is made from all natural and sustainable plant ingredients that actually work for skin without harming the environment.

Lina Hanson Global Face Serum

Hi Lovelies!

I hope you’re all doing well today :-]

I’m super excited today to share another fantastic serum with you and it’s especially great not only because of it’s ingredients, but also because the ideals and integrity behind them.

I’ve been using this serum for about a good month now and I’m really impressed, but before I get into that, I wanted to talk about Lina Hanson – the woman behind this lovely serum.

Lina Hanson is a celebrity makeup artist who is originally from Sweden and began her brand as a way to offer the best ingredients for your skin to all ages, with any skin type, of any ethnic background, anywhere in the world.

With that philosophy in mind, Lina set about formulating a simple, yet effective serum with carrier and essential oils from all over the world in it’s formula. From Morocco, South Africa, and India to Tunisia, Peru and Japan, she’s utilized potent anti-aging oils that have been used and loved in various cultures around the globe for centuries in order to offer these beauty benefits to anyone, anywhere, anytime.

I was so thrilled to receive a bottle of this lovely oil!  It comes in a lovely dark glass bottle that feels really high quality and luxe.

First off, it has kind of peculiar scent that was hard to ignore. It’s not that it’s particularly strong, but it just smelled odd to me. I know that it’s my own personal preference because when I asked my boyfriend, he looked at me like I was trippin’ and said it just smells like flowers. So, there you have it. It smells of flowers.

Aside from the odd scent, this serum is super nourishing, but surprisingly not heavy on the skin at all. It absorbs into the skin almost instantly and leaves no residue behind.

It is quite expensive at $85, but it includes a high concentration of top quality oils such as argan oil, baobab oil, and marula oil for their hydrating and healing properties.

After using this for nearly a month, I can attest to this serum’s effectiveness as I’ve seen a higher clarity in my skin, minimal breakouts, faster healing in spots, and a more even toned complexion.

Although this serum seems high priced, it’s for a great cause. With it’s use of sustainable, eco friendly, and naturally effective ingredients, this is a serum that is quite effective without harming the environment or your body. At the same time, it’s made in the USA so it helps support our economic growth. Lastly, as if that’s not enough, the Lina Hanson brand donates a portion of their profits to a different charity every 3 months as a way of giving back.

eco BABY

When it’s so cloudy and cold out, we often times think that we don’t really need to apply sunscreen, but that couldn’t be further from the truth because, in fact, most sun damage and cancer causing rays penetrate through clouds and will still do a number on your skin if you don’t take the necessary steps to protect your skin from aging and pigmentation as well as skin cancer. So, with that being said, protect your skin and do it daily, not just at the beach, and onto my review! 😉

I’ve recently been testing out this new 100% natural sunscreen for the past month or so and I really like it thus far.

Previously, I had been using Vive Sana (for that review, check here), but I ran out of it and haven’t really had the time or money to re-purchase it. To be honest, I really like both of them and they both have their pros and cons.

First of all, the Eco Logical Skin Sunscreens are really lovely. Unlike most natural sunscreens, these aren’t overwhelmingly thick and actually spread really well. They take a minute or so to set into the skin and the white cast is not so glaringly obvious, but there’s none of the struggle I usually experience when using most naturally sunscreens. This one actually fades a bit once it’s massaged into the skin. As I said, you do have to let it sit for a minute and then the white cast fades out, but be careful not to over apply because then you will have a white cast. I did that the other day and it left too much white sunscreen cast in my brows. Ew. My B.

Eco Baby

Anyway, the formula has little to no scent and none of the chemically sunscreen smell I remember from my childhood (which I am hopelessly fond of due to nostalgia LOL). It’s really inoffensive and I think, for this reason, it would be fantastic for sensitive skin and babies. It also hasn’t made me break out at all which some sunscreens have done to me in the past and that’s certainly something I can appreciate.

Where this line of sunscreens really shine is in the hydration and spread-ability department because nearly all natural sunscreens I’ve tried have been seriously difficult to spread onto skin and even harder to blend. This one is really not at all difficult to apply. It spreads really easily onto skin and soaks in reasonably quickly, though the minimal white cast takes a minute or so to go away as long as you don’t over apply.

Eco BODY

Also, these sunscreens are super hydrating to the skin because they include lots of beneficial plant oils including avocado and jojoba oil. The only thing I consider a somewhat con to these sunscreens is that they are not organic or GMO free and that’s kind of an important factor to some. If you want an organic sunscreen, check the link above to my Vive Sana review. If you just want the sunscreen to be 100% natural and made from beneficial ingredients, then this is a fantastic, solid line of sustainable and eco friendly sunscreens. They don’t include chemical sunscreens like conventional sun protection products, only a high concentration of zinc oxide (22%) . They are broad spectrum ( UVA / UVB ), water resistant, and are fragrance free and non-comedogenic ( will not clog pores ).

Inspired by this post  by the Classy Anarchist and you know, the utter lack of posts on this topic (that’s in my opinion), I decided to post on the fact that I absolutely hate to buy cleansers from the drugstore. There are a few that I think are okay, but for the most part, they all suck and here’s why.

Most Are Basically Glorified Hand Soap.

Many of these face wash drugstore brands, especially the ones for acne, are nearly identical to hand soap. The big differences between them and hand soap is that they include a few added plant extracts which they can then call beneficial to your skin, but what really sucks is that they use super drying foaming agents (sulfates, sulphates, etc.) that dry up the natural protective oils on your skin. While it is true that cleansers really are not on your skin long enough to have much effect, they are still on long enough to dry your skin out which leads to you having to either over-moisturize to compensate or have ridiculously dry skin or even oilier skin than you started with. You might also experience more redness, blemishes, and dry patches all at once. So, definitely save your money by buying their crappy $3 cleanser, but pay the price by having completely horrible, inflamed skin. I’m just saying.

Artificial, Preservatives, Carcinogens, Harmful, Etc.

Secondly, while they include 2-5 (on average) potentially beneficial plant extracts in the formula of their cheap cleansers, the rest of the ingredients go like this – water, sulfates, sulfates, soap, sulfates, mineral oil, artificial coloring, artificial preservatives, etc. Many of these sulfates, preservatives and artificial colors have links to cancer, skin disorders, etc. The most benefits for this cleanser really only add up for the big corporations who manufacture and distribute them – big big profits.

They Don’t Support the Economy or The Environment

Sure, the cleanser is cheap for you, but it probably costs them pennies on the dollar to make. Also, it’s unlikely to be made in your country. Pay attention next time you hear an advertisement for one of these; they like to confuse you with tricky marketing riddles such as “Bottled in the USA” or “Packaged in the …[insert country here]” when in reality it’s made very cheaply in another country (usually “third world”). Not only is this detrimental to your economy, but it can also be detrimental to the environment because since cheap ingredients are used frequently by these companies, they often end up endangering plant species. Take palm oil, for instance. It’s very cheap, but it’s also not sustainable. A lot of these ingredients being used has led to deforestation in some areas. I’m just saying.

So, with all that crap going on, what to do about it?

My best advice is to buy online. I know a lot of people associate that with being more expensive when it comes to beauty, but it doesn’t have to be. There are sooo many affordable options to choose from, especially on Etsy. Some of my favorites are Rainwater Botanicals, Naturallogic and Skin Apotheke. You can buy awesomely naturally formulated and often times organic skincare products for as low as $10. Also, you will pay for great quality, often times support your local economy, small businesses (can be local if you choose), and many of these use sustainable, cruelty free ingredients and packaging.

I know, some people love purchasing their skincare at the drugstore because it’s super convenient to do so, but my advice is to either get over that and purchase online or learn which brands you can trust and rely on and purchase those from your local drugstore instead. Some of my favorite drugstore brands include Burt’s Bees, Weleda, and Alba Botanica.

Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Face Cleansers:

  • Massage gentle cleansers (not scrubs!) well into your skin for 1-2 minutes.
  • Massage face scrubs into your skin for no more than 1 minute, gently.
  • Leave cleansers on your skin for 5-10 minutes to get mild face mask effects from them.

So, I hope this was helpful, not too rage-filled and yeah.

What is your opinion on drugstore brand cleansers Vs. others?

Do you care what goes into skincare formulation and manufacturing ?

I am sooo excited to be reviewing this incredible Marula Oil today for you!

I have been drooling over this stuff through my laptop for months and months and months. Not only is this face oil absolutely amazing, but there is much to be said for what’s behind the production and sourcing of this face oil.

The Leakey Collection was started by the Leakeys in 2002 as a way to help local Kenyans get sustainable entrepreneurial opportunities. With the idea of bringing the powers of pure marula oil to  women around the world, they’ve been able to give many Kenyans an ethical source of income that does not interfere with their life or culture. To learn more about their amazing journey and collaboration with Dr. Ashton Kaidi, read more here. You can also learn more about the harvesting process here.

Aside from their incredible program, their pure Marula Oil is truly amazing.

I normally wouldn’t review a product before using it for at least a few weeks, but after using this for nearly a week, I already notice the incredible hydrating properties of this lovely oil. It’s unlike any other oil I’ve ever tried because it’s extremely moisturizing without being the least bit oily. It soaks into the skin straight away and leaves no residue behind. Plus, unlike a lot of oils I’ve tried, this one has a really nice subtle scent. It’s like a very soft citrus smell or something, but it’s not overpowering; it’s just calming and beautiful. I noticed that even after only a week my skin was more hydrated without being super oily and not a breakout in sight! I also feel like this face oil lends a bit of soft vibrancy to my skin. It’s also really great as a primer if you want your foundation to look velvety and a bit dewy.

This is definitely one to check out, not only for it’s great beauty benefits, but also for the humanity and sustainability behind the product and company itself.

Nothing Nasty Touches My Lips With Karen Murrell!

These are my new lip favorites!

SERIOUSLY. They are capitial A-mazing.

Created by Karen Murrell (of course), she sought to offer the world a beauty brand with all the lovely aesthetics and appeal, but without the guilty conscience.

Not only are they certified organic by New Zealand beauty standards, they are also cruelty free, not tested on animals, near vegan with the exception of cruelty free honey and beeswax, made with ingredients that are locally sourced and traceable, free of harmful and toxic ingredients, and super sustainable from the ground up.

I am so happy I have had the opportunity to test these lovelies from Karen Murrell out because I will forever be purchasing these lovely lippies from this moment on.

They are perfect in almost every single way and they have all the makings of a perfect lipstick + healing balm in one.

These little cannisters are made from a very special and sustainable material – polylactic acid – a corn resin based material that begins to dissolve back into the earth within 100 days. They’re also greenhouse gas neutral so they don’t contribute to emissions or global warming. Aside from that, the boxes they come in are made from 100% recycled and renewable sources using New Zealand paper and soy inks. All their packaging is also ECOCERT.

With a host of natural and organic ingredients, they also have a plan and philosophy to be completely ecologically sound. This means cruelty free, sustainable, mostly sourced locally and always traceable ingredients, and packaging that won’t make you feel the weight of the world on your shoulders.

Check out the Lovely Swatches!

( From the Left – Carnation Mist, Coral Dawn & Sand Storm )

(Wearing my favorite shade – Carnation Mist)

So after all the technical talk, though I do think they have some impressive stats, I just want to mention that these lipsticks are beautiful to use as well. Not only are they beautiful to the earth, they look great on. They are really pigmented, hydrating and lovely. They look great and the colors are very lively and vibrant. They last a long time on the lips and smell so heavenly – just like cinnamon! It’s not overwhelming, but it’s such a pleasant surprise! No nasty wax taste or feel, these really moisturize your lips while looking fabulous. I’ve already converted a few people to these little lovelies!

So you see, it’s true, “nothing nasty touches my lips” with Karen Murrell.

Cheap & Eco Friendly Clarisonic Alternative : The Konjac Sponge

So excited that I’ve finally been able to try one of these little beauties!

I’ve been wanting one since I did this post back in June and so when the lovely ladies from  BeautyHabit offered to send me one for review, I was SO thrilled!

Of course I had to use it the very first day when I got it in the mail and it doesn’t disappoint!

First off, I was kind of bummed I didn’t get one of the clay enhanced ones at first, but now I really like this one because it is so versatile. It’s not tied down to one skin type or whatever like the clay-enriched ones are and so any skin type can use it and it can be used with a cleanser of your choice as well which works great.

I really love this tool! It’s such a no brainer type of cleansing tool / cleanser in one. I actually think it would be especially brilliant for someone who wants an easy skin routine and even for guys because it’s exfoliating, cleansing, softening and hydrating all in one product!

The first time I used this, my face felt so super soft, refreshed, cleansed, brightened and hydrated and I used it just as it comes straight out of the packaging with no added cleansers or anything. I’ve since tried it with various cleansers, all with really nice results. I’ve also oil cleansed and then used this and it was great as well.

It’s just such an easy cleansing tool to use and although it won’t give you facial-like deep cleansing results that a Clarisonic will, this is an awesome alternative for people on a budget who want something that cleans well without any irritation or dryness! It really works well to cleanse your face in a super simple way.  You can also use this on your body as well and it’s really nice, though small, and gentle exfoliates so for those, like me, who have sensitive skin this is a nice alternative to a loofah.

I highly recommend this to anyone and everyone, especially those who want a simple routine, have very sensitive skin and also guys. This is something I will absolutely purchase (actually, ironically I have it in another tab as we speak LOL) because it’s so versatile, it can be used on anyone and it’s the easiest way to get clean skin without causing irritation or having to think too hard about it. Another thing I really dig about using this sponge is that it’s super eco friendly, 100% biodegradable and sustainable so  I don’t have to worry about any waste accumulating from my using it.

These are meant to last up to 6 months, but if they start to break down then they recommend you replace it. Also, it has kind of a very subtle strange smell to it, but it’s not too noticeable really, especially if you’re adding your own cleanser to the sponge when you use this.

Other Awesome Features of These Sponges:

  • Eco Friendly & Sustainable
  • 100% Natural konjac potato sponge
  • 100% Free of Dyes and Additives
  • 100% Biodegradable
  • Gentle On Sensitive Skin, even those with psoriasis and eczema
  • Easy to Use
  • pH Balanced
  • Various sponges for face, body and babies

As weird as it may sound (for the 1 guy or so out there who is reading this! Thanks, by the way! :-D) , I really think these would be a godsend for guys out there who want easy cleansing. I forced my boyfriend to try this, as I usually do with everything I try much to his displeasure, and he actually liked it. It’s not difficult to use and it gets the job done. You can easily pick one with your skin type and you may not even have to use a moisturizer if you don’t want (though I recommend you do use one and some sunscreen if you want to be one of those hot older guys, otherwise power on the fast track to wrecked-face-ville, by all means).

Anyone else who wants to use this can and should as well because it’s super affordable $9 USD so even the cheapest bargain hunter scrooges of the world can spring for one!  Aside from that, it works really well and your skin will certainly thank you.

What do you think of these konjac sponges?

Would you or have you ever tried one?
