Best Organic Oils For Your Skin Type

Many people have a lot of misconceptions about using oil on their face or even their body.

Whether you have acne, sensitive skin or just hate the oily feeling, a lot of people have had their own bad experiences with oils.

What many people don’t know is that often times, oil in mainstream skincare doesn’t even use natural vegetable and fruit oils (or very little of it), but instead opts for cheap mineral oil (a bi-product of crude oil) which is terrible for your skin. It sits on your face, seals off your pores (hence clogging them), and causes a lot of skin irritations. Mineral oil is a big reason a lot of people have come to shudder at the thought of using oil on their face. Another reason is that many people aren’t familiar with the functions of different types of fruit and vegetable oils and may be using the incorrect oils for their skin type. After all, all oils are NOT created equal; some are heavier while others are lighter. The following are a few of my favorite types of oil for each skin type and some that will work for any.

  • Organic Grapeseed Oil: Grapseed oil is great for all skin types. Very similar to human sebum, it works well for oily and sensitive skin especially as it sinks directly into your skin and leaves no greasy feel. This oil works well for those who don’t like that oily feeling on their face. This oil is high in vitamin E and linoleic acid and is known to work well in the aid of healing damaged skin, soothing eczema, dry skin and can be used under the eyes. It has a very light consistency and little to no scent.
  • Organic Raspberry Seed Oil: Known for its high percentage of fatty acid content, raspberry seed oil is great for those with aging, dry, mature or sun damaged skin. Fatty acids, if you are unfamiliar, are great protein building blocks for the skin and can help to healing any damage to your skin’s moisture barrier. This is a heavier oil so it should be used more for drier skin types or otherwise used very sparingly on oilier skin types. It has been shown to be useful in soothing eczema and dry skin and is high in vitamins A and E. Some studies have also shown it to be a valuable SPF as it may be useful in protection from UVA and UVB rays. It is used in many sunscreens/sunblocks for this reason. This oil is darker in color and is a heavier oil with an herbal scent that you wouldn’t expect from raspberries. A little bit goes a long way.
  • Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil: This is one of my favorite oils! I love olive oil for both it’s health properties as well as it’s topical benefits. EVOO is great for all skin types and is touted as one of the natural oils that most closely resembles human sebum (human oils) so it is therefore readily accepted and absorbed by the skin. It is an excellent cleansing oil and facial moisturizer. It can also help to soothe razor burn, skin irritations, and dry skin. It has a large range of antioxidants and fatty acid proteins to help rebuild and protect the skin from free radicals. It has also been known to, in some degree, work as a natural sunscreen. *This is based on a scientific study done, but you should STILL wear proper sunscreen/sunblock with a good percentage of zinc oxide in order to truly protect yourself!*
  • Organic Neem Oil: A lesser known oil, neem oil is great for acne and other skin irritations. It has been shown to relieve itching skin irritations, fungus, redness and infection due to its high antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies also show it soothing dry or damaged skin and also lightening scars and hyper-pigmentation.  If you are not keen on herbal smells though, I recommend you just use a product that includes neem as this oil has a particularly distinct scent. It also has a pretty thick viscosity so a little goes a long way and it will last you a long time.
  • Organic Evening Primrose Oil: Another great natural oil, evening primrose oil is often used in anti-aging skin care lines for it’s high GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) content, which is known to be useful in rebuilding damaged skin cells and calming inflammation. It also has a high moisture property making it useful against dry skin conditions and other irritations such as rosacea, acne, and atopic dermatitis. It has shown to be useful in clearing skin rashes and irritations and is known to help clear clogged pores. The thickness of this oil is somewhere between the lightness of  grapeseed and the heavier feel of raspberry seed oil. It doesn’t feel heavy on the skin, but would likely work well for drier skin types, combination skin types, and oily and acneic skin in small amounts.
  • Organic Rosehip Oil: Due to its high vitamin A (retinoic acid) content, rosehip oil has been shown to help immensely with skin cell  turnover and regeneration. This has been shown in studies to improve many skin concerns such as blemishes, scarring, hyper-pigmentation, and wrinkles. It also helps to soften skin texture and condition the skin overall. It’s texture may be suited to any skin type in moderation, but will be most suited to drier skin types.
  • Organic Coconut Oil: Coconut oil is often touted for its many health benefits, but little is mentioned of its skin care benefits. It can be applied as a natural moisturizer or skin cleansing oil and has been shown to be very effective at treating acne. Many brands use coconut oil derivatives in their anti-aging skin care lines to help moisturize mature skin. This oil is a liquid when heated (does not need much heat and has a high burning point so you wont destroy it’s nutrient content if lightly warmed ), but hardens in the cold. It melts on skin contact and is easily absorbed into the skin. The only thing with coconut oil is that is can be very oily feeling so a LITTLE bit goes a very long way. A small 1 oz. tube of it will last you months. It can also be very runny once it has melted, but it is also much lighter once melted. Use sparingly as too much can definitely make you feel oily. Uses show it as being good for all skin types, but it depends on your preference as some may find this too oily for their taste while others love the moisture or find it clears their acne breakouts.
Other Beneficial Oils: Sunflower Seed Oil, Castor Seed Oil, Pomegranate Seed Oil (pricey!), Cherry Seed Oil, Strawberry Seed Oil, Tomato Seed Oil, and much more.
All in all, there are some great natural skin benefits to be gained from the daily use of natural fruit and vegetable oils. They are known to offer some of the same benefits to your skin as mainstream products, but without the side effects and preservatives. Though the idea of putting oil on your face may make you cringe, you might want to reconsider in lieu of what these oils can offer your skin.
That’s all for now!

Complexion Enhancers : Should Storybook Apothecary Offer Them?

So, I have a new obsession with the Complexion Enhancers from Omorovicza.

I have not yet tried them as I really cannot afford to drop $135 on any beauty product, let alone this one, but the idea of a complexion enhancer has really stuck with me ever since I read A Model Recommends awesome article on Omorovicza’s Complexion Perfector BB SPF 20.

After checking out the Omorovicza website and their products and then realizing that I would have to severely charge my credit card in order to be able to afford these products, I got to thinking.

Maybe I could make my own complexion enhancer with my own fairy tale spin and with natural and organic ingredients.

After all, most of these BB creams, complexion enhancers and treatment foundations have the same aim here.

So, my goal would be to offer a great textured cosmetic product with light coverage, brightening agents, sunscreen, anti – aging properties, and a luxurious feel to the product that is still eco friendly, and much more natural and organic than other brands across the board.

Why?

Because this is what I love when I look for beauty products: a product that looks nice, works great and improves my skin in the long run without a ridiculously high price tag.

I would really love to try Omorovicza and I bet there are a lot of other people out there who would too, but like me , they just can’t afford it.

So, my goal would be to offer the same luxury and beautiful glowing finish for less than half the price of these high end luxury brands, and with even more nutritional botanical benefits for your skin.

If I decided to go ahead with this and offer these, I would want to offer 2 different so-called “complexion enhancers”:

A Brightening Formula to Lend a Natural Glow

&

A Matte Formula For those with Oily skin or who prefer a matte finish.

So what do you guys think?

Is this something you would be interested in or not really?

Your Feedback is much appreciated !

Thanks!

Late Night Formulating

So this is kinda a crappy photo, but hey, I have a Droid X2 and it’s not known for it’s picture taking abilities.

Anyhow, this is a picture of a custom serum I made really quick for myself.

This is just a bit to give you an idea how I can make a custom serum for you and your skin needs.

It’s just to give you an idea of how my acne formulation could look (the one sold here), depending on what you want. I can also make acne serums in a more creamy opaque formula, but I personally prefer gel type serums to creams as I find creams can be heavy and, with summer coming, my oily to combination skin doesn’t need a heavy cream or oil.

This serum is in a base of sea kelp ultramarine, honey and aloe so it’s very hydrating and calming, but without being overly oily or heavy.

I’ve gone ahead and added organic botanical extracts such as Eco Certified Green Tea Extract and Eco Certified Sea Fennel Extract as well as an herbal extract blend for oily acneic skin that includes burdock root among others for added antioxidant benefits meant to help clear skin by calming irritations and slough off dead skin cells to increase cell turnover which not only helps to detox clogged pores, but also helps to generate collagin and elastin.

All in all, I’ve basically created a light night serum that will help to brighten my skin by lightly exfoliating my skin, hydrating and calming irritations and encouraging cell regeneration in order to prevent and treat fine lines and any free radical damage on my face.

Super tired so goodnight for now!

Coming Soon! Healing Face Powders, Blush and More!

Image

So, after finally establishing my shop on Etsy, I am now able to focus on expanding my line a bit from the 3 original serums.

I am very excited about the line of healing face powder foundation shades and blushes that I will be coming out with very shortly!

They will include a strong calming powder base with botanical powders and extracts. This is something I have never seen done much if at all and that is basically the use of all natural botanical powders in the powder formulation.

This means that your makeup will function as both a means to look awesome and offer color, but also as a treatment while you wear it as the botanical ingredients work to help soften lines, calm redness and inflammation and even help to clear breakouts.

This is something I have always wanted in a powder myself so I am extremely psyched to be able to offer it to my customers!

Not only will you be able  wear the powders as a powder foundation and a blush, but the formulations themselves are designed to improve your skin and not only cover up blemishes, fine lines, and hyper-pigmentation, but also help to treat them!

These will be $25 for a 20 gram twist and lock sifter jar (saves product and great for travel!).

Only one size will be available initially, but I am thinking of  adding a 10 gram jar to offer a smaller trial type size for those who want to try it before buying the larger jars and also to make it more affordable to students, bargain hunters and the like who are on a budget.

^Let me know what you think! Do you want smaller jars to be available?

Aside from these awesome powders, I plan on also offering a line of face/eye creams to offer those who love the creamy texture of a face cream or eye cream over the texture of serums. These will include an acne, wrinkle and eye cream.
I may also add in a brightening cream in the future.

These will typically run the same prices as the serums, depending on size so about $15-$25.

Lastly, I will be adding concentrated creamy and gel facial cleansers. The gel cleansers will be more for brightening and blemish clearing while the cream cleansers will be more moisturizing and nourishing for dry, mature and sensitive skin types. In the beginning, I am going to offer these in smaller sizes, but they will last you a good amount as a little will go a long way. Later, I will add in larger sizes. Cleansers will be about $15-$25 as well.

That’s all for now!

I’m very excited about all of this and I hope you will leave me feedback on what your thoughts are.

Have a Nice Weekend!

F.A.Q.

Here is our Helpful F.A.Q.!

It should answer most of your general questions, but if you have something to ask that goes unanswered, feel free to send me an email for a quick reply!
What are your beauty products made with?
Only the finest ingredients. I use all natural ingredients coupled with other all natural ingredients to create the best toners, creams, serums, etc. to feed your skin top quality nutrients. I would never put anything in my products that would harm your skin and I would never make anything for you that I would not use myself. I use my own products. All natural and organic carrier oils, EO’s (essential oils), natural mineral powders/starches (mica, honey powders, coconut milk powders etc.), fruit exfoliant powders, plant powders, dead sea salt, clay powders, some actives and vitamins, and natural flavors as needed. I always use the freshest ingredients in my skincare items. I never use fillers or harmful ingredients and many items are organic. Ingredients are listed in each product description and may change depending on the item, but will always be specified and listed as they are made.

Did you know? Many times in commercial brand skincare, the main ingredient is water. This means that usually 90% of the formulation is water and only 10% are actives, usually synthetic or bio-engineered in a lab. In my formulations, every ingredient has a place in the formulation and little to no water is used (other than the natural water already present in sea kelp ultramarine). I promise to use only beneficial ingredients for the skin and to be organic when possible.
How are the items made?
I use the finest ingredients I can find and, after researching which of them will go well together in order to provide the most benefits to your skin, I put them together to create something pleasant and wonderful. You know, pleasantly wonderful and with a fun Grimms fairy tale spin!

Can you make custom items?
Yes! I would love to. Anytime you want a custom item made for you, simply contact me and ask! I can make any beauty item within the line of reason. This means I can make serums, creams, toners, cleansers etc. for any specific concern you might have. Just let me know and I will do my best to make something you enjoy and love.

What do you make?
Everything! I can make anything from serums, creams, toners, masks etc to cleansers, shampoos and bath treatments. If I do not list it, that does NOT mean that I cannot make it for you. Just ask me.

Have a question that is not listed here? Contact me for a speedy reply !
