As I’ve been so busy preparing all the giveaway posts for my 12 Days of Christmas Giveaways Event, I just have not had the time to do all the reviews, makeup looks and other normal beauty posts I’d normally be doing about now so sorry for the lateness on this favorites post and the lack of a typical collage that I’d normally do. This is just real quick and then it’s back to the grind as I’ve got to prepare for tomorrow’s flash giveaway. If you haven’t done so already, definitely hurry and sign up for the 2 giveaways that are open as the first closes in 12 hours or so and the second closes in less than 48 hours!

And onto my November Favorites!

  • Alpha-H Liquid Smoothing & Perfecting Face Mask.  This one has been a real life saver! My skin has been all over the place since the weather started to change and this mask has kept breakouts in check and helped smooth out patchiness, brighten dullness and just wake my skin up. It’s a great pick-me-up mask and it has the great tingling effects with the results to back it up! Highly recommend this one!
  • Living Nature Foundation. I’ve really been loving this foundation as it has a lot of healing ingredients in the formula including harakeke flax gel and manuka which are said to heal, hydrate and rejuvenate the skin and I really can attest to these effects! Although the coverage is not full, it has a general light to medium that’s buildable and really seems to even out the skin without covering it up. I love that it lets my skin breath and doesn’t break me out. Plus, it’s nicely hydrating and looks even more polished when used with the Jane Iredale Smooth Affair Primer.
  • Jane Iredale Smooth Affair Facial Primer and Brightener. This primer is so great! Although I covet my Korres primer because it is silicone free and I’ve had something of a phobia when it comes to silicone primers given how often they seem to make me breakout, I really love this one and it does not make me break out so that is fantastic! Instead, it gives that fantastic poreless finish we all associate with silicone primers with none of the typical irritation associated with them. Normally, in the past I’ve felt like, well I’d like the poreless look today so let me use this crap primer and pray my skin doesn’t react in the five hours I’m wearing it and I’d usually break out. But with this primer, I don’t have to worry because I never break out! It makes my skin look great and gives the natural foundations ( like the Living Nature or Jane Iredale ones) a fuller coverage that still looks natural, though a bit more finished.
  • The Leakey Collection Marula Oil. This has been such a great oil for hydrating my skin! I love that it’s just pure marula oil and that it’s a product I can really stand behind in terms of ethics and things. The oil itself feels so silky and yet it absorbs almost instantly into the skin and no residue. This is something I would absolutely repurchase though I’d need to save up a bit as it’s a little bit of a splurge!
  • Suti Skincare Cleanse Organic Balm. Last on the list, but nonetheless amazing! If you follow then you’ll have somewhat of an idea of the extent of my little obsession with Suti products. They just have such greatly formulated products and these products actually work! Some natural products are all natural and then their formulas suck despite their fantastic ingredient list, but these are so effective! I love this cleanse balm for any time, all the time. It just seems to really straighten my skin out when it’s going haywire for no reason and that’s whether it’s summer, winter, whatever. This. Just. Works. Try it. It’s amazing and it will nourish and smooth your skin in a beautiful way.

So, that’s it for my November favorites!

What are you loving this winter season to keep your skin in great shape or get the perfect fall makeup look?

Happy Tuesday Everyone!

I hope you’ve all had a lovely weekend, a lovely Thanksgiving (if you’re here in the USA), and enjoyed some nice retail therapy, whether online or in stores.

Personally, this weekend was somehow not long enough for me!

I know, that seems ridiculous as I had Thursday, Friday, the weekend AND Monday off, but I guess I’ve just been doing too much running around to get much rest in which is fine by me, though my body is complaining a bit!

Thanksgiving was fantastic for me, having been the first time that I can remember since I lived at home that I actually didn’t drive all over the place to several Thanksgiving celebrations, but I wasn’t having it this year and it was seriously nice to just stay home and relax…and you know, eat pie.

It seemed really short-lived, though, as you all might know, I was at the local mall at nearly 2:30 AM! And it was CRAWLING with people! I was, like WTF?!

I am someone who really never experienced the madness of Black Friday until I was 20 and even then, I still didn’t go to the places I knew would be seriously flooded so this was the first time I’d actually seen a really packed shopping area in the wee hours of the early morning, mind you, so I was a bit blown away.

Take A Look For Yourself:

Sorry for the crappy quality, but you can see it’s quite busy at only 3 AM!

You see, the mall had totally given me the slip. I checked opening times and Sephora’s recording said they opened at 5 AM so I had planned to go wait in line around 3 and wait until 5 AM, but when I arrived, I saw a huge flood of people already going in and out of the mall so I’m assuming they gave incorrect hours to intentionally prevent mobs and riots of people from all showing up at once, but I am pretty sure they actually opened at midnight which is just insane.

Anyhow. Saturday was spent shopping as well, but less so as shops were still really packed. The after – black friday line at Best Buy (electronics store) was so long, it weaved throughout the store and they had an employee with a sign that said “End of Line Starts Here” to let customers know because there were literally people everywhere. There’s nothing I want badly enough to stand in that line!

Sunday and Monday I spent getting a bit of rest in, but still had to catch up on laundry and things.

-Sigh- So, alas, I’m still pretty tired, but had a nice holiday weekend anyway!

Oh! Also, I’m debating between buying a treadmill or getting a gym membership as I’d like to run more regularly, but I live in a bad neighborhood so any advice is much welcome on which is the better path to take!

How was your holiday, weekend, etc?

Did you get in any shopping online or in stores?

Congratulations to the winner of my Black Friday Beauty Giveaway – Fiona Naughton from LaBelleDameSansMerci!

I had my boyfriend randomly draw a name out of a bowl so it was completely random.

The picture above shows everything I picked up from Sephora based on what was on sale and what everyone requested. I will also be including a sample size of Miss Dior perfume, some ECOTools Exfoliating Shower Gloves, & a Burt’s Bees holiday minis set.

So Congrats to Fiona – please email me your address at StorybookApothecary@gmail.com so I can mail out your goodies!

Thanks so much to everyone who participated – I really appreciate you all reading my blog and signing up for all my giveaways.

If you didn’t win, don’t fret, I’ll be doing at least a week’s worth of 24 hour giveaways beginning in December so you will have a chance to try again very soon!

Enjoy your weekend!

Black Friday - it's a bit disturbing how close to reality this is.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

I hope you’re all enjoying turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, sweet potato, greens, and pumpkin pie!

Now, as much as Thanksgiving is about eating and laughing (maybe a bit about Black Friday Sales & Shopping! Lol) , it’s also about being thankful and giving thanks. That’s the tradition of this holiday and it’s important to take note and remember what we’re thankful for, who we are thankful to have in our lives and to let our actions speak those thanks so that’s the theme of today’s post – things I’m thankful for this year.

  1. My Friends. This is a big one! Man, my friends keep me sane, especially when I need someone to vent to, talk to, someone to cheer me up when I’m sad, or just someone who I can say – can I come over? and they’d say yes without question. Those people who don’t judge you and who believe and have faith in you without question. Thank you, so much, to my friends who are always there for me in life, no matter what. You know who you are. You mean so much to me.
  2. My Family. I’ll be the first to say how insane my family is, how they absolutely drive me up the wall, and how frustrating, but that doesn’t mean I don’t love and appreciate them. They are always there to chat to when I have troubles, to give advice when I need it, and to bring me leftovers for no reason at all on any given day. They always think of me and for that, I feel eternally grateful to them.
  3. My Health. If you follow this blog, you’ll have heard me complain and get frustrated in the area of fitness, health and everything, but I am still so grateful to be able to get up and walk, run, jump, and skip around. That I’m not ill or weak and that my body is strong and healthy. I know it takes a huge amount of strength for those who have ailments and conditions and they amaze me all the time so I am very grateful I have the strength to help.

So, I hope you all have a lovely Thanksgiving and enjoy time spend with your family and friends!

What are you thankful for this year?

Do you ever get tired of using a million and one products to treat every single skin issue on the planet? Hyper-pigmentation, scarring, dullness, hydration, acne, redness, the list goes on. What if I told you you could get away with using only ONE moisturizer year round with a few tiny adjustments and it could treat a variety of your skin concerns at any given moment and for a lot less money?

Today’s post is going to show those of you who wish to keep their skincare routine to a minimum how to do just that using 1 moisturizer and a few additives to keep on hand to transform your basic moisturizer into anything you want.

The concept for this is super easy, really. Choose a basic moisturizer that you like, that doesn’t irritate your skin, and keep it super simple. As a basic moisturizer, I’ve been using the Philosophy Keep the Peace Moisturizer as it’s quite basic and includes some nice extracts for keeping the skin calm. Once you’ve chosen your basic moisturizer, you’ll want to pick up a few additives, depending on your skin issues and/or concerns. I’ve listed a few above to give you an idea of the kind of additives you may want to include, but depending on what your concern is, you may need to adjust.

Before I get into anything, please remember to take extreme care when using essential oils in this way. Using them undiluted on the skin can do a lot of damage so know your limits. I am not a doctor, dermatologist, etc. nor am I qualified to give medical advice. I am only sharing what has worked for me and my skin so, if you’re unsure, please consult your primary care physician and/or dermatologist before trying any of these methods as outlined below.

First off, the most basic of the basics is tea tree essential oil. It’s so versatile and it can do a number of things, especially for those who battle breakouts. The first thing you can do is use it as a spot treatment by tapping a very tiny amount directly onto any pimples, blackheads, etc. Another way to use it is if you have a ton of breakouts and you want like an “acne all-over treatment” type moisturizer, mix 1-2 drops of it in with a small amount of your basic moisturizer and apply it liberally on your face, neck, etc. Wherever you’re broken out. It will feel tingly and cooling for a bit, but once it’s dry, it goes away. If not, rinse immediately. Also, this all- over type treatment also works well as a balancer for the skin. It will semi-mattify, but not dry out your skin. If it dries your skin out, you’re using too much essential oil & need to tone down on the amount you’re using.

Another good essential oil for balancing out the skin is also carrot seed essential oil and it’s great for both dry skin and oily skin types because it simply helps balance the skin as opposed to some others like tea tree which might be a little too oil-absorbing instead of balancing for those who have dry skin and acne. I don’t advise this for those who have sensitive skin because using essential oils like this can feel a little intense at first and it may cause you irritation. For everyone else, this may really do your skin some good. If you want to use another essential oil other than tea tree for breakouts, some good ones include rosemary, sage, or frankincense.

Next, if you have pigmentation, scarring or dullness issues, you can use the same 1-2 drops mixed into a small amount of your basic moisturizer to treat those concerns. You can use a number of essential oils such as sandalwood, orange or lemon. Any citrus fruit essential oil variety can be great for brightness. Sandalwood is especially beneficial for those who suffer from acne or who have suffered from it in the past and now deal with scarring because it treats both. Citrus essential oils will brighten skin in the same way that slathering lemon juice all over your skin would help brighten it over time.

Thirdly, if you are battling redness, rosacea, or any kind of irritation or inflammation in the skin, a lot of times, it’s best to simply leave your skin alone. You may have cause some irritation already and you want to let your skin calm down before putting more crap on it. If you absolutely must, you can apply hydrosols and that will be a good alternative. If you have no irritation, but you suffer from a lot of redness anyway, some good essential oils that help calm the skin include chamomile, calendula, lavender, and clary sage. Clary sage can also be beneficial for those who suffer from acne AND have sensitive skin.

Lastly, if you need hydration, mixing a bit of your chosen carrier oil is all your need to get that extra bit. This is especially beneficial in the fall / winter time when skin needs more nourishment due to cold weather, but it’s also good if you have a drier skin type or live in a cold climate. You don’t need to exercise too much caution with carrier oils as they are simply plant oils and not concentrated like essential oils are, but all the same, take care to choose one that’s right for your skin & the season. If you have oily skin, some light oils include grapeseed and sweet almond oil. If you have combination skin, evening primrose and grapeseed are both great. If you have dry skin, olive oil, apricot kernel, avocado and argan are all great choices. If you have normal skin, any will work, but jojoba is solid for those with neutral skin types. Remember, if you’re allergic to nuts, stay away from sweet almond and other nut oils – instead, opt for evening primrose, grapeseed or olive oil. If you have sensitive skin, grapeseed, evening primrose and rosehip all work nicely.

Personally, I use a variety of essential oils in a basic moisturizer if I’ve run out of my favorite products or I need a quick treatment and I have some days to spare before I can re-order products I like. For breakouts and oiliness, I use a bit of moisturizer with tea tree oil or I use a Q tip to spot treat blemishes. It does tingle a bit, but I’m used to it. If I need to calm my skin down, I use the moisturizer by itself with nothing else. If I need more moisture, I add a tiny bit of evening primrose oil to my moisturizer for a bit of more nourishing hydration. For scarring and dullness issues, I occasionally use lemon or grapefruit essential oil, but I mostly just have a strict 2 times exfoliation per week. Sometimes I’m lazy and I’ll just do a face mask or use my clarisonic in place of exfoliating, but it has the same effects. Otherwise, if I’m dealing with a particularly horrible skin issue (breakouts or something), I might do an intense exfoliation, but only once that week.

Just as a side note- if you have sensitive skin, you can do the added moisture step in this post, but don’t use any essential oils as many people who have sensitive skin won’t be able to handle it & it may cause irritation. If you want to try something similar, you can use hydrosols as they are less concentrated than essential oils and less likely to irritate the skin, but still offer skin benefits. You can also infuse carrier oils such as olive oil, grapeseed oil or evening primrose oil with dried plants for a few weeks or months and this will help you gain the benefits from them with little to no irritation.

IMPORTANT! If you do any of these methods, you MUST wear sunscreen as essential oils make skin sun sensitive. You don’t want to be treating pigmentation at night with EOs and then causing more during the day so DEFINITELY pack on that sunscreen!

So, I hope you found this helpful – feel free to ask me any questions you may have & I will do my best to help!

Happy Monday!

What Sales Are You Most Looking Forward To This Black Friday – If you do plan on shopping in physical stores, that is?

I know, I know. It might sound tantamount to self-absorbed to be giving yourself a gift, but hear me out. As someone who normally forgets about herself and always puts others’ needs before my own, I think it’s high time I gave myself a gift and a lot of us women are the same in that.

We become preoccupied with the needs of others before our own and the next thing you know, you’re the one letting yourself fall off the deep end, especially where health is concerned, so I decided to say no this year.

No, I will not bake all that unhealthy food. I am going to exercise 5-6 times per week and eat healthily instead. No, I don’t want to cook for 4 hours while everyone else enjoys the holiday. I’d rather pitch in and contribute one or two dishes and spend the time with those I love instead of slaving over a hot stove, but I digress.

So, this holiday season, take some time and dedicate a bit of it to yourself – whatever that means. Whether it’s taking the extra hour or so to read, exercise, or something else for just you, I say do it.

After all, you’re important too, right?

So, right now, I (and the damn universe!) am giving you permission to do something for your health, state of mind, and overall well being this year and not feel bad about it.

Don’t wait until the new year to get your resolutions together.

Start right now and don’t stop.

Good Luck!
