8 Beauty Picks for Earth Day

Troubled Skin Serum With Frankincense and Tamanu

Troubled Skin Serum With Frankincense and Tamanu

This Troubled Skin Serum from Rainwater Botanicals is one of my favorites for treating acne, but better yet is the fact that all Rainwater Botanicals products are super affordable (some are $10 or less), produced in the USA from organic and wild crafted ingredients, and they use recycled packaging and sustainable materials. They have loads of products that I love and you can learn more about them in a post I did here.

The Problem Solver Face Mask

The Problem Solver Mask by May Lindstrom is my favorite face mask to date and with good reason – it’s made with all natural ingredients including cacao, bamboo charcoal, and various natural minerals and clays so it literally comes from the earth. Also, all of the products by May Lindstrom come in reusable glass containers so there’s no plastic waste. Aside from the fact that it’s completely naturally formulated, this face mask works seriously well at clearing, calming, and toning the skin. It’s better than any mask I’ve tried yet. You can see my review for it here. Aside from this mask, they also have other fantastic products including The Good Stuff Radiance Oil which is amazing for getting that dewy glow look. You can see a post I did on how to use it here.

Karen Murrell lipsticks are some of the most sustainable lip products I’ve ever seen. They have some serious high standards set to them and they’ve really held up against them. The lipstick containers themselves and the packaging are all made with biodegradable, recycled or plant materials. The lipstick tube itself starts biodegrading back to the earth in 100 days which is something I’ve never heard of for any product let alone a lipstick. The lipsticks as products are not only extremely hydrating, but they smell amazing and have lovely, trendy colors that look great on any skin tone. I actually haven’t met a KM lippie I didn’t like. They are cruelty free, sustainable, locally sourced and traceable, ECOCERT, green house gas neutral, and made with all natural and organic ingredients. They are my favorite HG lipsticks. You can see the original post I did on them here.

Konjac Sponges are make facial cleansing simple, clean and green. They’re made from konjac, a kind of potato found in Japan, and various clays so they are entirely biodegradable. In fact, after a few months they actually begin to fall apart and literally degrade. They work really well to cleanse and soften skin without stripping it of it’s natural oils while also brightening, gently exfoliating and calming. Plus, they’re super cheap at only $9 each. You can see my original post on them here.

The Suti Cleanse Organic Balm is, hands down, the best cleansing balm I’ve ever tried. It’s super hydrating, cleansing, calming, and doesn’t clog pores. It comes with a muslin cloth so you can even use it to gently exfoliate skin without drying it out or irritating it. Made with all organic plant oils and butter, this balm can be used as a cleanser, moisturizer, face mask and exfoliant. The balm is made with a certified organic formula and comes in a reusable glass jar. You can see my original post on it here.

Bamboo 6 Piece Brush Set

ECO Tools have some amazing brushes and they’re super sustainably made from bamboo and other sustainable materials. They work really well for applying makeup and even skincare products. I’ve used their smaller eye brushes to apply eye cream before and that works really well. Also, their shower gloves are amazing as well for body exfoliation.

Travel Set

Living Nature products are some of the best natural products I’ve tried. They offer a wide range of skincare and cosmetic products which are all really nice. They use exotic ingredients found in New Zealand and other naturally sustainable plant oils and extracts in order to soothe, hydrate and heal skin. I love how gentle their products are and they can definitely be used on any skin type, including sensitive. You can see my original post on their products here.

Antonia Burrell‘s Natural Glow Cleansing Oil is the best cleansing oil I’ve found for acne prone skin types, but it will definitely work well for any other skin type as well. It’s very gentle, calming and nourishing without being heavy. Aside from that, it comes in a reusable glass jar, is made from all natural and sustainable plant ingredients that actually work for skin without harming the environment.

I was recently sent this lovely, all natural petroleum jelly alternative balm called Waxelene for review.

It’s a very simple balm moisturizer with a short and simple list of ingredients : Organic Soy Oil, Beeswax, Organic Rosemary Oil, and Natural Vitamin E ( from soy beans ).

I really, really  love this natural alternative to petroleum jelly because it has super healing properties and is very effective, but the formula is uncomplicated and easily pronounced.

This balm reminds me a lot of the Egyptian Magic Skin Cream ( see my review on that – here ), only this has a much more pleasant smell than that one in my opinion. Both are pretty equally effective, though this one is a lot more affordable.

I’ve used this balm all over my face and body, on cuts, scars and any skin irritation or dryness I can find and it has done amazingly well. It has quickly healed cuts, scrapes and burns, leaving no scar behind. It hydrates my skin really nicely and doesn’t break me out. It actually does a nice job of sealing in all my skincare products for overnight repair treatment which I love. It moisturizes dry hands, nails and cuticles. I’ve even used it around my eyes and it doesn’t irritate them at all so if you have a small child, I think this would definitely be gentle enough to use on them as well. This is a solid medicine cabinet must have; I will definitely purchase this when I’ve run out.

Special thanks to Waxelene for making this awesome balm and giving me the opportunity to try it – it’s AWESOME!

You can learn more about and purchase the Waxelene balm – here.

Have you ever tried the Waxelene petroleum jelly alternative?

What are your thoughts about natural alternatives to petroleum jelly?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this!

Happy Wednesday!

So I recently received this lovely travel kit of all of the Me & the Girls skincare products for review and they’ve truly been lovely to experience.

If you are unfamiliar with the luxury organic skincare brand, Me & the Girls is an organic beauty brand which aims to better the lives of girls and women here in the United States and abroad by donating a portion of their proceeds to various womens’ charities including the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood, Women for Women Intl., and G.E.M.S. (Girls Educational Mentoring Service). They also seek to aid local organic farms and the economy by purchasing locally and organically whenever possible. Their products include a high volume of organic ingredients, including certified organic Cupuaçu seed butter which possesses a high capacity for water absorption and aids in restoring elasticity and hydration to the skin.

In my mini kit, I received the following: Limonum Body Scrub, Lavandula Revive Softening Creme, Moon™ Anti-Aging Night Facial Moisturizer, Moon™ Serum, Lavandula Revive Foot Scrub, Bamboo spoon and the Me & the Girls Signature logo travel bag.

My Thoughts:

  • Limonum Body Scrub: This body scrub smells very citrus-y, just as the name implies. It’s made on a base of fine grain raw organic cane sugar, coconut oil, cupuaçu seed butter, lemon creme and avocado butter. I really enjoyed using this scrub as it was both exfoliating and hydrating at the same time. It really helps to soften the skin and hydrate all at once to reveal glowing skin.
  • Lavandula Revive Foot Softening Creme: I love the texture of this. It smells just like lavender and melts on contact with skin. It acts more like a balm than a creme, in my opinion, but works excellently nonetheless. It softens dry skin and calluses on the feet and really hydrates overall. Plus the scent is very relaxing!
  • Moon™ Anti-Aging Night Facial Moisturizer: This is a fantastic facial moisturizer for dry skin or combination skin that is feeling dry ( especially in winter! ). My skin has been super dry with this extremely windy, cold weather we’ve been having and since I ran out of my beloved Suti Cleanse Balm, this has been just the thing to keep my skin in good shape! It melts on contact with skin, rather similar to the Foot Softening Creme, but the scent smells more like subtle scented baked goods than lavender and gently hydrates and softens the skin. I was near peeling and super flaky on my chin area and this really helped moisturize that entire area overnight. I would not recommend this for breakout prone or oily skin, though, as it might be a bit too nourishing for some.
  • Moon™ Facial Serum: This is a really nice serum which includes various plant oils to heal and rejuvenate dry, sensitive, mature and sun damaged skin types. I think it’s a nice serum for any skin type as it doesn’t have much scent and doesn’t feel too heavy on the skin, though acne prone and oily skin types should be wary of the amount they use as too much can be a bit too much. It’s certainly very hydrating, but I enjoyed using the moisturizer more than this one, surprisingly.
  • Lavandula Revive Foot Scrub: With the same scent as the Foot Softening Creme, this sugar scrub includes lavender and a spearmint butter creme base which feels a bit cooling and very similar to the body scrub only with a more relaxing scent and cooling sensation that is absent in the body scrub. Perfect for feet!
  • Bar Beleza Multi-Use Beauty Bar: This all-over beauty bar comes in a stick balm form and can be applied anywhere you might need it. I used on dry areas of my face, under my eyes, and on lips with much success, but it’s up to you how you use it. I love that it comes in stick form because it’s great for traveling and super convenient to use. It’s super multi-tasking and very hydrating and since it’s in stick form, you’ll use just the right amount every time. My favorite way of using this was as a lip balm!

Dynamic Duo

I was recently very lucky to be sent 4 products from the EVOLVh Hair Care line and I’m so glad because they just might be some of the most simple, yet effective products I’ve yet to try in terms of natural hair care.

First off, if you haven’t heard of EVOLVh, their hair beauty philosophy involves offering products with healthier ingredients (hence the h in EVOLVh which stands for hair and healthy) without making it complicated and while maintaining the luxury often associated with many standard salon products.

To learn more about their history and company goals and standards, check out their About Us page.

In terms of packaging and performance, I’d say they’ve done a great job. The packaging is sleek and chic as opposed to bells and whistles that other companies might employ, but I prefer the sleek design personally. The products all include a variety of beneficial ingredients including a pH balanced base to help keep your hair at the right pH level and infused with a variety of 20 herbs to nourish and repair hair along with plant oils, wheat amino acids, and various vitamins and extracts.

UltraShine Moisture Shampoo

Their UltraShine Moisture Shampoo is sulfate, paraben and sodium-chloride free making it non-drying, body safe, and safe for keratin smoothing treatments (if used by hair stylists in a salon). I’ve been using these products for about a little over a month now and I really like this shampoo. Most shampoos, I’ve found, simply seem to clean your hair and nothing more, even the healthy varieties. When my hair was not so damaged, it never really made a difference to me, but now that my hair is super winter storm dry and very unmanageable, my hair gets super tangled and is difficult to get a comb through, even right out of the shower. Although this shampoo is not necessarily a miracle in a bottle for me, it does seriously help to detangle and smooth my hair a LOT. I like that the scent of the shampoo is pleasant, yet non-offensive. It reminds me a bit of Johnson’s Baby Shampoo, but obviously without the chemicals, and I really enjoyed that because it felt sort of nostalgic to me as most American kids grew up using that. My hair is much softer and more manageable and I experience a lot less of a battle when I go to comb my hair out after a shower so, for that, I have really loved using this and will continue to until it runs out. I may actually purchase this one when it runs out because I find it definitely gets the job done.

UltraShine Moisture Conditioner

The UltraShine Moisture Conditioner is sodium chloride and paraben free and also vegan. Both their shampoo and conditioner are meant for any hair type from thin and fine to course and thick hair to damaged, dry, or frizzy, whatever your needs. I really like how all the products in this brand work together because what the shampoo doesn’t do in terms of moisture for my hair, this conditioner picks up where it left off and gets the rest of the job done. This is super softening and conditioning ( really! ) and it really does help detangle my hair. I also feel like I’ve seen a huge difference in the texture and appearance of my hair in this past month of using these products because I noticed my hair is a lot less frizzy, a lot less tangled, and a lot smoother, shinier, and softer when it dries straight out of the shower.

StartSmart Leave-in Conditioner

The StartSmart Leave-In Conditioner Spray is one of my favorites out of the line, mostly because my hair gets so tangled and this really does help. It’s a great detangler on dry hair ( I don’t need it much after showering thanks to the shampoo + conditioner duo ) and also helps to make my hair shinier and less frizzy. Apparently this also functions as a heat protectant, though I’ve avoided heat styling tools lately to minimize damage and be able to see the most results while using these products. Another benefit I really like about this product is that it includes a variety of protective and hydrating plant oils which also help protect your hair from UV damage as well.

Ultimate Styling Lotion

Their Ultimate Styling Lotion was just alright for me, but that’s mostly because I don’t have a huge need for it. I did find it works really well to minimize frizz, amp up shine, condition and volumize hair, especially when used on damp hair and then blow dried. I got the best results straight out of the shower when I applied a bit of this from the middle of my hair to the ends and then blow dried it all. I love that this also includes natural herbs and plant waxes to style hair instead of synthetic ones and I really enjoyed using it to braid my hair because it keeps my hair in place all day without making it go all hard or crunchy like a hairspray would.

Overall, I really enjoyed this hair care line. I don’t know if I would consider them to be my holy grail of hair care, but they are a really solid brand nonetheless. I like that any hair type could use these products and that the products gave me great results. I do wish I could see more of a difference in my hair, but perhaps I need more time using them in order to see more results. I love that this line makes my hair manageable, but doesn’t weight it down or leave it too oily as my hair can easily go from one extreme to the next. These products are just the right amount of hydration and volume without being too greasy or too drying and I love their high standard of using natural ingredients. Lastly, I really love that their products are made in the USA as I love a good product which also helps support the economy. I’ll definitely keep using them until I run out and I’ll update you all if I see more results or benefits.

BestMoisturizers2012_StorybookApothecary.Com

Hello! I’m back again with the second in a mini series of posts I’ll be doing on my top beauty picks for 2012 in all things skincare, makeup, nails, body care and personal products. Today’s post was really difficult to do as I’m quite obsessed with using serums and moisturizers and I have tons of favorites for different purposes so this was REALLY hard to choose. Even though it seems like I’ve chosen a lot, it took me ages to cut it down to this so I hope you’ll find this helpful when choosing the best serum or moisturizer for your skincare needs!

First in the list is the Alpha-H Balancing Moisturizer and Gentle Exfoliant. I’ve written again and again about Alpha-H as a brand because I love their products. They are so effective and though they aren’t as natural as I’d like, they are a brand that will give you the results you want, especially if you have spots, scarring, pigmentation or acne. They use a high concentration of ingredients so these products don’t just sit on your skin and waste time – they do what they’re supposed to do and you will see results with continued use. This moisturizer is my favorite for keeping breakouts at bay, keeping my skin smooth and bright, and even helping diminish some minor scarring I have on my cheeks. When first using this moisturizer, you WILL feel the tingle, but your skin will adjust over time and you will see results, especially if you have frequent breakouts or pigmentation issues. I definitely recommend gradually transitioning into using this and maybe using it once a day every other day to help your skin adjust a bit, but it does work really well. It uses a high concentration of glycolic acid (similar to their Liquid Gold exfoliator) around like 12% or something in order to slough off dead skin cells, unclog pores and encourage cell turnover. I can’t recommend this one enough, but it’s not for those with sensitive skin so if you have sensitive skin, I would advise you to use something gentler. For my full review on this moisturizer and other Alpha-H products, check here.

Second in the list is the Rainwater Botanicals Sea Buckthorn and Pomegranate Intensive Treatment Serum. This serum is incredible for dry skin and for giving you a bit of a faux glow due to the tint it has from the pomegranate seed oil. I don’t recommend this to those with oilier skin types, but if you have combination skin, dry skin, or maturing skin, you will definitely benefit. It works to heal your skin, encourage cell turnover and diminish the appearance of fine lines. I don’t have many wrinkles at the moment, but it certainly helps soften lines and hydrate the skin to it’s optimal level. I especially love this one in the winter as it keeps my skin from becoming dull or flaky. Another reason to stand behind this brand is the fact that their products are organic, wild crafted, made in the USA, and super affordable (think around $10 for this one!)  You can learn more about the specifics on this serum and other Rainwater Botanicals products here.

Third in the list is the Living Nature Extra Hydrating Toning Gel. This is absolutely amazing for those who suffer from dry skin or oily skin AND acne because it hydrates without feeling oily or leaving a greasy residue behind. It’s so easily absorbed into the skin and it smells amazing. It keeps skin hydrated, soft and helps calm redness. This one is also great for those of you who hate the oily, greasy feeling and enjoy the gel type moisturizers because this is a super light formula, but unlike those cheap, oil-free drugstore moisturizers that hardly hydrate and have questionable ingredients, this one includes tons of beneficial ingredients for your skin and will hydrate very well without feeling heavy. You can check out my original post on Living Nature here.

Next on my list is the Suti Organic Purity Moisturizing Balm. This balm is very similar to their Cleanse Balm only the scent is a bit different and it’s a bit less moist (if that makes sense) and soaks into the skin more easily than the Cleanse Balm. Although a bit pricey, it’s well worth the cost and will last you a good few months because you need a dime size for your entire face each time. Your skin will feel softer, more hydrated, and heal broken capillaries and other lesions (if you have them). This would be especially beneficial for those who have dry skin, combination skin, and overly congested, oily or irritated skin. I also think someone with sensitive skin or eczema or rosacea could benefit as there are many healing benefits in this super simple, but effective balm. Check out my full review on this balm here.

Moving down the list, we have the Rainwater Botanicals Skin Repair Serum for Acne, Scars & Wrinkles. I love this serum because it’s such a cure-all serum/moisturizer. It hydrates the skin, has ingredients such as wild crafted frankincense to combat breakouts and valuable plant oils which heal sun damage and soften the appearance of fine lines. Another reason I love this one so much is the scent. It smells absolutely incredible and reminds me of something, but I can never figure out what it is. Plus, I can get a 1/2 oz. of this (which lasts around 3 months) for around $10. All of these products are organic and wild crafted, made in the USA, and super affordable so I feel great purchasing them. Check out my full post on Rainwater Botanicals products here.

Last in the list is the Pure Marula Oil from the Leakey Collection. This is a fairly new discovery, but I really wanted to include it in the list because it’s a fantastic basic moisturizer that hydrates skin, heals damage, calms redness, and soaks right into the skin without leaving a residue. Although it’s quite pricey, it’s profits go toward supporting fair trade, employing women in Africa and developing their local economies in order to help their community and lives thrive. I really love what this oil stands for and I feel a lot better about paying the high price because of how it actually benefits women in Africa. I’ve used this as a moisturizer and even mixed a bit of it with my Vive Sana sunscreen (see how I apply my sunscreen here) because it helps thin the sunscreen formula a bit so it’s more easily blendable (white cast anyone?) plus marula oil includes many antioxidants and a low level of spf which adds to your sun protection. Although I don’t recommend using this alone to protect you from the sun as the levels would be too low to be sufficient ( around SPF 5 or lower, depending), it may help protect you along with your sunscreen. Check out my original review on this marula oil here.

So those are my top picks for the best face moisturizers of 2012 – stay tuned for more posts on my favorite beauty products of 2012 coming soon!

Recently, I was sent some small samples of the Malin+Goetz line of skincare and I was pretty excited because they are made here in the USA! If you’re unfamiliar, Malin and Goetz is a basic skincare line that utilized the experience of 2 men working in business and marketing to create an eco friendly line that would work even for the most sensitive skin types.

Ever since the economy meltdown, I am looking for new brands made in the USA for everything – clothes, shoes, food, and, of course, beauty, but it’s difficult what with all the corporation out sourcing to every other country in the world, but our own, to find things that are actually American made. It’s a really shame, in my opinion, because we used to be completely self-sufficient (think 1950’s), but now we are so dependent and I want us to be more self-sufficient. So, anyway, it’s just one more reason for me to get behind this skincare brand 😉

Check Out What I’ve Tested:

grapefruit face cleanser.

Grapefruit Face Cleanser

This cleanser contains .5 % grapefruit extract and loads of amino acids for hydration and skin cell renewal, helping your skin to heal, stay calm, balanced and moisturized.

They also say it’s gentle enough for rosacea prone skin types as well as dry and breakout prone.

Personally, I like this as a gentle basic cleanser. It certainly gets the job done! It’s light, calming, and non-drying. It includes some nice ingredients as well, though I wish they had a more natural formula.

If you’re someone who wants a nice gentle all-in-one makeup removing, skin cleaning type cleanser, this is a nice one to try out.

jojoba face scrub.

Jojoba Face Scrub

A nice and gentle face scrub, I enjoy the jojoba meal in this one because it feels like I’m getting scrubbing action without the irritation. This also includes their “Amino Acid Technology” so it’s meant to help rebuild your skin as well as hydrate. I don’t know how much of that I got as I was only able to use this a few times, but I do enjoy the scrub nonetheless.

spf 15 face moisturizer.

SPF 15 Face Moisturizer

This is a really gentle face sunscreen. If you’re someone who constantly breaks out from typical sunscreen formulas (like me), this may be worth a go. I really like that it’s gentle and light. It’s not heavy or sticky at all, though it does have a faint hint of that typical sunscreen smell which some may or may not mind. I personally like it, though I prefer natural physical sunscreens (think zinc oxide) which don’t give off the scent (it comes from chemical sunscreens like octinoxate and avobenzone). Nonetheless, it offers both UVA and UVB sunscreen protection as well as their “Fatty Acid Absorption Technology” which is said to hydrate, balance and protect from free radical and sun damage all at once. This was my favorite product from them!

vitamin e shaving cream.

Vitamin E Shaving Cream

This is a super nice shaving cream. It doesn’t get super foamy or puffed up or anything, but it’s nice and milky and a little foamy which works well. Enriched with vitamin E and menthol, this is both hydrating and cooling to use so it helps prevent razor burn. It also includes their “Amino Acid Hydration Technology” as well so it works to prevent the ashy dryness usually caused from shaving with bar soap. I really like that it includes vitamin E and their hydration technology because it does seem to prevent razor burn. I was only able to use this once to shave my legs, but it was to really nice effect. I’m not much for buying shaving cream, but I may just try this one out. It’s really nice to use and it does help calm skin after shaving.

Overall, I really like this as an American made skincare brand. It’s really great for people who don’t want anything too complicated, but just want something basic that works well because this does. I do think they could be more natural and green with their formulas, but as far as effectiveness and gentleness goes, Malin+Goetz have got you covered.

Check Out Their Products – Here.

Disclaimer: I was NOT given compensation to write this blog post in any way other than the samples that were sent to me from Malin+Goetz for review. My opinions, thoughts and experiences with this product are my own irregardless of how I obtain products.
