Pain is Fear Leaving the Body.

You’ve probably seen this original quote all over Pinterest, fitness websites, health websites and other fitness blogs, but I decided yesterday that the quote is wrong. Pain is not weakness leaving the body — it’s fear.

The reason I say this is because I had a weird revelation while running yesterday and that is – I don’t feel as afraid.

I feel like fitness is such a liberating thing. We fight it as much as we might because it’s much easier to hide ourselves away rather than face the world and say “This is who I am…and proud of it” because doing that might mean judgment, rejection and yes, failure.

But I also realized another really epic thing and that is what we’re capable of when we stop being afraid, anxious and just go for what we want – it’s SO liberating!

I realize now that no matter what, I’d rather face my failures and get back up, face myself head on so I can improve and succeed in the future than stay forever on the ground because trying and failing is better than doing nothing at all and feeling constant anxiety, fear and despair.

So with each stride toward your goals, whether fitness related or not, move towards your better future with the confidence that you’re leaving fear behind you without a backwards glance.

What are your goals for 2013?

Today’s post focuses on all the amazing DIY pins I’ve discovered on Pinterest. There really are some awesome things to be discovered on Pinterest – definitely join if you haven’t already! It’s convinced me I can make everything despite a severe handicap (no, not really) when it comes to crafts. So, here are some of my favorites; I hope you enjoy!

Pinned Image

DIY Bracelet From animatedknots.com via Pinterest

I’m not much for crocheting or sewing or anything that requires a lot of patience (a virtue I was not gifted with) really, but I actually love this bracelet and plan on making one (or several) for myself! It seems pretty easy.

Pinned Image

DIY Nail Polish Tutorial From beautylish.com via Pinterest

I’ve been wanting to try this one for ages and I really love this tutorial. Anyone tried this yet with their eye shadows? Any advice is appreciated!

Pinned Image

DIY Coconut Milk Shampoo From onegoodthingbyjillee.com via Pinterest

I really want to do this one as hair products can be pretty expensive, but I’m concerned about it being color safe. Again, if anyone has advice on this front!

Pinned Image

DIY Re-Vamped Flats From makeit-loveit.com via Pinterest

I really love this tutorial for re-vamping flats as I’m someone who tends to scuff up perfectly good flats in a month’s time. Yeah, I’m shoe-abusive and I tend to get bored easily so this is a fun way to change with the trends without going broke.

Not sure if this actually works on nails, but I’ll try it soon and let you know!

never buy white strips again!: dip q-tip in hydrogen peroxide (the key ingredient in whitestrips) and apply to surface of teeth for 30 sec before brushing teeth) once a day for a few days. Teeth will look whiter in 2 days.

DIY Whiten Your Teeth via Pinterest

I haven’t tried this one yet, but I’m seriously going to pick up some hydrogen peroxide so I can test it out. Basically, you dip a Q-tip into some hydrogen peroxide and polish each tooth before brushing your teeth. Wait 30 minutes with the peroxide on your teeth before brushing regularly. People say there’s a huge difference when you do it for one week straight and it’s certainly cheaper and more eco than Crest white strips, right?

Pinned Image

DIY Blackhead Treatment From stylebees.com via Pinterest

I haven’t tried this one yet, but I’m curious to see how it will work. May try this one tonight as I finally picked up some lemons. Anyone tried this yet?

Pinned Image

DIY Eyelash Growth Treatment From fashionindie.com via Pinterest

I have seriously long lashes (Italians are hairy okay), but since I decided to get tweezer happy as a teen, my brows grow in bizarrely and don’t grow in at all in some places so I may try this one out on my brows.

Pinned Image

DIY Nail Dots Pinned from Pinterest for iPhone via Pinterest

As I’ve said, I’m nail – inferior, but the idea of making dots on my nails sounds like fun. I’m like a kid banging on a piano – I can’t actually play the damn thing, but I can pretend.

Pinned Image

At-Home Spa Treatments From lulus.com via Pinterest

I looove to do DIY facials in the winter for some reason. I don’t know if that’s because I’m in somewhat hibernation and leave my house less or what, but it’s fun and these are pretty easy to make. I’ve done all of these except the bath one and the anti-redness facial. Though, lately, I am getting a lot of redness (I’ve run out of my Suti Cleansing Balm & Moisturizer! 😦 ) due to the weather changes so I may try the anti-redness one soon.

Pinned Image

Map Nails via Pinterest [Not sure of source – if someone knows, please let me know so I can update this!] – You can get a tutorial for this here though > http://polishpedia.com/map-nails.html

This seems like a fun alternative to painting my nails and it looks cool too!

Pinned Image

DIY Sock Bun From beautylish.com via Pinterest

I’m trying this one tonight as I haven’t had the heart to mutilate any of my socks until now, but this one seems too good to pass up and certainly more gentle than constantly putting my hair in a bun the normal way. Maybe.

Romantic French Braid Tutorial From abeautifulmess.typepad.com via Pinterest

I may try this come Thanksgiving. I really love the look! It’s so simple, but very romantic and it’s cold out and about that time when I get super sentimental and pull out my Pride & Prejudice and start quoting about “how ardently I admire and love you..” and my boyfriend looks at me like, WTH did you just say? with his eyebrow raised. Yes, it happens.

Hope you’re all enjoying your weekend so far ❤

Happy Thursday Everyone!

So, today I thought I would do another fashion finds post, inspired by fairy tales of course(!), and this time I’m doing it on Alice in Wonderland. Although she hasn’t really shown up in Once Upon  A Time (the ABC show I’m obsessed with!), I do think this type of post is tons of fun to do so I’m doing whichever characters I feel like doing, whether from the show or not, but I hope you enjoy anyway. After all, Alice is one of the most iconic fairy tale type characters even though she technically isn’t and I absolutely love her so, with that, here are my fashion finds for Alice, both modern and classic!

So, what you think?

Do you prefer a Modern Alice or a Classic Alice style?

What do you imagine Alice wearing?

Happy Tuesday!

I hope everyone is enjoying their week so far and sticking to all of their fitness goals. As someone who often struggles with that myself, I thought I would share some of my favorite pins (from Pinterest) for workout ideas. I think these are super helpful, especially if you’re, like me, the kind of person who likes to mix it up with your workout frequently, you get bored easily and need change in your workout to stay engaged, or you just find new and different workout routines of interest. I find these little routine help keep me on track with my fitness goals and help me to stay creative and active all the time.

What is your favorite workout or exercise to do?

How do you keep yourself motivated when working towards a goal, fitness or non-fitness related?

I hope everyone is enjoying their Friday!

I’m constantly browsing the web to find inspiring pictures of fit women, fitness tips, healthy recipes, motivational tips, etc. and I thought I would share some of my favorites with all of you. Perhaps they will help motivate you as much as they have done for me! Be prepared for a semi-long post of pictures!

[I do NOT own any of these images. I’ve only found them online. Some of them have been pushed around the net so long, I can’t find their origin point to give proper credit so if they belong to you, please comment and I’ll update them with proper credits. Thanks!]

I love this list of ways to stay motivated. It really puts things into perspective for me and helps me stay positive. Think of solutions, not problems. Reasons why you cant rather than excuses for why you can’t. Because you can.

[Source: http://bloging.lifeplusfitness.com/index.php/clean-your-way-fit/ ]

I find this so awesome! I always clean when I’m pissed off or stressed so this certainly helps me see the “upside of anger.” Also, I like that I can get things done and burn calories too. For some reason, when I see this, I just think “hot housewife” or something. Weird, maybe, but it’s true!

[Source: http://bloging.lifeplusfitness.com/index.php/on-the-go-meal-plan-how-to-get-in-shape-with-a-busy-life-2/ ]

Okay so definitely check out the link above because it talks about how to pack your meals if you’re very busy, working, etc. The bag above, though, really caught my attention. It’s an earth friendly lunch pouch that has eco friendly gel embedded in the seams of the pouch itself so what you do is freeze the entire bag and then it keeps your lunch, snacks, etc. chilled for up to 10 hrs. Awesome, right?! If you want the bag, her post has Amazon links to a few different kinds of eco lunch bags.

Again, check the link on this one. This lady really knows what she’s talking about. I really like the tips she gives for working out and staying motivated and I love that she’s realistic about it.

[Source: http://zaggora.com/viva-hotpants-pink/]

I’ve just been lusting after these hotpants by Zaggora for ages. They’re meant to help you burn more calories while you workout! Definitely check them out, though they are a bit pricey.

This one just makes me smile. I love spreading kindness and happiness. I wish I could find the exact post this is from, but alas, I couldn’t find it. The blog is lovely though!

[Source: http://fit-to-row.tumblr.com ]

This is one workout I’m seriously considering. With all the amazing shows that have come out, I’ve gone from watching little to no TV to watching a million and one shows and I’ve begun doing crunches and things all through. This is a nice fun workout to try as opposed to sitting for hours on the couch.

[Source: http://dangshefine.stockphotosweb.com/post/26800129987]

YEAH! Lol, this is going into my list of “Things to say to my boyfriend,” you know, just because. I like to see what I can get away with. 😉

[Source: http://dangshefine.stockphotosweb.com/post/26800284527 ]

I love the strength in this photo as well as the lovely designs they’ve edited into the image. Very pretty!

[Source: http://dangshefine.stockphotosweb.com/post/26800417768 ]

I’m not that great at push-ups, but ever since I saw the Swedish version of the Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest and they showed Noomi Rapace doing those insane push up, crunches thing, I’ve wanted to be better at them. I’m just saying…she looked like a total badass.

[Source: http://fitspoholic.tumblr.com/ ]

I love this one! It’s so important to put in the extra effort because, obviously, working out and being consistent isn’t always easy. I’ve lacked serious motivation to stick to Insanity this week so I did it twice so far this week and nearly every other day, I watched some TV, but I did crunches, knee ups, squats and plank while doing so. I feel less guilty that way.

[Source: http://colleengetsmoreawesome.tumblr.com ]

love this quote! I hate when either I catch myself talking about things without doing them or hearing others do it, it just grinds on my nerves. I want to be someone who does things, who has an effect and makes an impression. This is a great reminder to stop talking and do things.

[Source: http://dangshefine.stockphotosweb.com/post/26361210284 ]

So true! I mean, how much waiting do we actually do thinking there will be a perfect moment? But the thing is, the perfect moment will never show itself so just go. Just do what you need to do to get what you want in life because no one else is going to do it for you.

[Source: http://dangshefine.stockphotosweb.com/post/28832169271]

This one really put things into perspective for me. That is a LOT of minutes in a day. Of course I have time to exercise at least once a day.

[Source: Self Magazine Online; http://www.self.com/fitness/workouts/2011/10/crossfit-slideshow#slide=1]

She looks so graceful considering how awkward the pose is, but I love the definition in her arms and legs. She looks so toned and strong, but still lithe and feminine and that’s definitely something I’m striving for!

running songs for a half marathon

[Source: Lululemon; http://www.lululemon.com/community/blog/13-1-songs-for-13-1-miles/?CID=fb13.1songs ]

I love workout playlists! This one is really great! It’s always the worst when I’m on a roll jogging and the music runs out. Then I have to scramble to change the song and it throws me off my groove. Anyone else have this issue? Lol.

“You won’t regret that extra push.”

[Source: http://pattyys.tumblr.com/post/31883862654]

This always motivates me to try hard, work harder in each exercise I do, and run/walk/jog or just move for longer. The more muscles you have, the more calories you burn. Keep it in mind next time you work out!!

[Source: http://dangshefine.stockphotosweb.com/post/32821016965 ]

I want to look this graceful and focused while running. You know, as opposed to out of breath and sweaty.

You are.

<p>Julie Nelson<br />

Amazing body. I try to imagine what I would look like at my ideal in my mind’s eye. They say this can help bring your dreams, goals, aspirations into reality by visualizing and then taking action towards them. What do you think?

[Source: http://sweetskinnystrawberry.tumblr.com/post/33178962006]

This is something I need to remember at all times. A lot of times, I find myself feeling super discouraged because I lost 1 lb, 2 lbs, etc. I know, it’s not a lot, but it’s still something and I need to remind myself that little things add up to big change in the long run.

<p>Dr. Oz’s Tangerine Weight-Orade Recipe… For a powerful metabolism-boosting drink, try Dr. Oz’s Tangerine Weight-Orade. It contains: green tea, shown to boost metabolism 12% by drinking just one cup; tangerine, with a chemical composition that increases sensitivity to insulin and stimulates genes that help to burn fat; and mint, a calorie-free flavor enhancer. In a large pitcher, combine: 8 cups of brewed green tea / 1 tangerine, sliced / A handful of mint leaves / Stir this delicious concoction up at night so all the flavors fuse together. Drink 1 pitcher daily for maximum metabolism-boosting results.<br />

I typically sort of have this hate for Dr. Oz ever since he featured “Diabesity” on his show, but I actually like this Tangerine “Weight-Orade” as he calls it. Pretty yummy.

[Source: http://jesuisbonne.tumblr.com/post/27780617057]

This idea always excites me as I’m not someone who can all out sprint for 40 minutes. I prefer a calm jog/walk pace, but this is a nice idea to vary things up and rest when I need to. After all, it burns more fat that way!

I was surprised to find I actually do want this. It’s nice to be able to look back and be proud of your progress. No one wants to stay the same or never change. Everyone wants growth, progress, life.

[Source: http://10000steps.tumblr.com/post/33183026568]

I found this image seriously helpful for reasons why you’re hungry. In the past, I had a lot of issues discerning when I was actually hungry, when I was emotionally eating, when I was thirsty, etc. This is helpful to keep me mindful of my body and mindful of my food intake.

<p>submitted by eyesofakat<br />

[Source: http://dangshefine.stockphotosweb.com/post/28412060266/reasonstobefit-submitted-by-eyesofakat]

Exactly. You know, a lot of my goals in weight loss are not just about losing weight. It’s about proving to myself that I can do it if I try really hard. If I put in the effort. And it’s about living to your full potential as opposed to half-mast. Because you never know what you can achieve when you’re living life at your best potential self. Seems limitless right?

So, I hope this is helpful to you as much as it has been to me and have a lovely weekend!

What do you find motivational for health and fitness?

Are there any images that inspire you?

Please share them in the comments; I’d love to see your images of motivation and hear your thoughts on this!

This fashion post was inspired Rumpelstiltskin / Mr. Gold from ABC’s Once Upon A Time, but I was motivated to do this post because fellow blogger friend, Senator Brett, complained there were  limited options for men in fashion, but I totally disagree! I tried to be a little creative with these fashion picks to emphasize that, but who knows if I was success. At the very least, I hope you enjoy the collages! 🙂

What do you imagine Rumpelstiltskin / Mr. Gold wearing?

I posted this photo yesterday on Instagram (I’m @StorybookBeauty :-)) and I thought I would post on it as well because it dawned on me that, although this is something I’ve been doing for years, it may be entirely foreign to a lot of you.

This is how I catalog, keep track of and visualize all of my goals and dreams!

I first got the idea from my mom – she’s a damn wonder woman and the source of nearly every good idea I’ve ever had, even if indirectly, but then I think we all have the same feeling about our women we look up into in our lives, no?

Anyway, so Basically Here is How it Works:

  1. Purchase a Cork Board & Push Pins Or Some Construction Paper and a Glue Stick. You will need scissors for both of these.
  2. Magazine Cut Outs Or Print Photos From The Net. Simply pick images that will represent your goals. For instance, my goals for this month are eat healthy, whole foods, workout consistently, Find Peace of Mind, Be More Fashionable & Spend Time with Friends & Family more. For eating healthy, I’ve chosen photos of dishes that look healthy, wholesome but also delicious to me! For working out, I’ve posted Nike type ads with motivational statements as well as pictures of people being active. For being more fashionable, I’ve pinned images of styles I like, people I think are fashionable, etc. Just get creative with it and have fun! I have a blast doing this every time; it’s like doing a grade school art project!
  3. Pin or Use a Glue Stick to Collage Your Photos Together.
  4. Post In a Notebook that you consult daily or Post Up Your Cork Board in a place you Look Every Day to stay focused on them. The Bathroom or Facing Your Bed are both great because you will see it often. This is to keep you mindful of your goals all month. If you put it away and never look at it, it defeats the purpose. Make sure you browse your notebook often or if that’s not something you can remember, the cork board is the easiest way to do things because you can mount it on a wall wherever you spend a lot of time so you can see it frequently.
  5. Refresh Your Photos Each Month or At Least Once Every 3 Months. I like to do this because my goals often change or stay the same, but evolve to a more specific idea and I like my collage to reflect that. Plus, it keeps things fresh. It can get boring or you might start ignoring your board if you see it gathering dust or looking dated. Plus, this is a great way to remember your goals and always keep them in mind if you frequently update the board to reflect your heart’s desire.

I hope you like this idea and try it for yourself! It really does make a difference in my overall focus on my goals, my positivite attitude in life and towards my goals, etc. so I hope it can help you too!

So, what are your goals?

Have you done anything like this for your goals before?

Image of Bob Ross ; Credit – Wikipedia
Source – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Ross

Recently, my boyfriend reminded me of an old childhood favorite – Bob Ross.

If you’re unfamiliar, Bob Ross was a famous oil painter who used to host his own TV show, The Joy of Painting, on the PBS network. I used to watch him off and on as a kid, right along with Mr. Rogers who I also watched right along with Wishbone and the Magic School Bus.

So anyway, my boyfriend is an art student and we often watch a lot of different artists online together, especially on YouTube, but what’s funny is we keep going back to Bob Ross’ old PBS segments because they are seriously relaxing, optimistic and encouraging which got me to thinking – I want my childhood optimism back!

Somehow, I feel like we’ve all lost this childhood optimism and curiosity somewhere along the way.

I don’t know, maybe every generation feels this, but the 90’s seemed to me a more optimistic time than the present, though maybe that’s only because we no longer have Mr. Rogers and Bob Ross or perhaps the fact that I am no longer a child.

Who knows?

So then I thought about how inspiring Bob Ross has been to me, not even because of his painting (though I like that too!), but just because of his philosophy and attitude in life. For instance, he had famous lines such as “If you believe, you can do it,” and “We don’t make mistakes, we just have happy accidents.”

In childhood, this never really made any sense to me. I simply enjoyed watching the show and listening to Mr. Ross’ calming voice, but looking back at the videos now, I am so moved, encouraged and inspired by it. I know a lot of people might look at it and mock it or maybe laugh and think it’s a joke, corny, or stupid, but I find it really touching, inspirational, optimistic, a little nostalgic and, most of all, uplifting.

After growing up and becoming an adult, I’ll be the first to admit I’ve lost a bit of my childish optimism to jaded sentiments, but each time I watch Bob Ross’ soft spoken painting advice, I feel a bit of that happy inner child returning.

Thanks for listening to my /rant.

For your troubles, here’s an awesomely composed Bob Ross’ clip mash up video that’s been autotuned into a really inspiring song & some of his famous quotes!

[Direct Video Link: http://youtu.be/YLO7tCdBVrA ]

Bob Ross Quotes:

  • “We don’t make mistakes, we just have happy accidents.”
  • “You do your best work if you do a job that makes you happy.”
  • “…Gotta give him a friend. Like I always say ‘Everyone needs a friend.” [on painting more than one tree]
  • “…And just beat the devil out of it.” [on cleaning your paintbrushes]
  • “…In our world there lives a happy little tree over there.”
  • “You can do anything you want to do. This is your world.”
  • “The secret to doing anything is believing that you can do it. Anything that you believe you can do strong enough, you can do. Anything. As long as you believe.”

I originally did this post where my fashion finds were inspired by Lisbeth Salander and I’ve had a lot of fun finding pieces this way so I decided to do a series of these with different female characters that I like from books, films, etc. for inspiration.

This time the pieces are inspired by Katniss Everdeen.

Katniss is strong, self-sufficient, tough, skilled, resilient, beautiful, and intelligent. She is another one who doesn’t let other people define or control her and she makes her own way. I love that about her. Some of the pieces are inspired by the books and some inspired by the film. I hope you enjoy!
