Summer is right around the corner so I thought I’d share some posts I’ve done recently (and some not so recently) to help you prepare for this super fun season!

Some people buy new clothes and makeup for summer while others get super fit for “bikini season.” Others do nothing at all and simply enjoy the weather.

Today’s post is focused on how to get you the best skin possible without using products. I definitely think products can help skin out, but getting nice dewy and healthy skin, in my opinion, is easiest to create when following a healthy diet, utilizing a few beauty tips and DIY recipes. You’ll be surprised at how effective some of these really are. so without further delay, here are some tips on how to get flawless skin naturally. 

EAT HYDRATING FOODS FOR GLOWING SKIN

Achieving glowing skin can seem impossible at times, and yes you can always fake it with makeup, but to get authentically glowing skin, I highly recommend a diet high in fruits and veggies, especially berries. They have very high concentrations of antioxidants, help keep your body hydrated (which in turn, hydrates your skin), and they are high in vitamins and nutrients essential to repairing and maintaining healthy skin. To learn more about the benefits of berries for your skin, check out the original post I did on this here. Aside from berries, there are a ton of hydrating foods you can consume to up the hydration of your cells and therefore your skin. DIY TONERS TO CALM REDNESS & INFLAMMATION

I used to think I needed some kind of magical product to fix my skin, but after much experimentation, I find that a nice DIY recipe works just as well, if not better, and I am left with a lot more cash in my pocket at the end of it all. One thing that I definitely deal with a lot, especially in the Summer time, is redness. The most effective treatment for this, by far, are toners and you can make a number of them with ingredients you already have in your kitchen. Check out the DIY toner recipes – here.

SUPPLEMENT FOR GREAT SKIN

Although we can do everything right, including eat well, sometimes I think it’s still pretty difficult to get all the nutrients our skin and body need to function at optimal levels. Because of this, I think supplements can be very beneficial to our systems, especially in resolving skin problems such as acne, dry skin, redness, and other issues. PLANT OILS IN SKINCARE

You’re probably really familiar with the idea of using plant oils in skincare as many brands have begun to utilize these in their product formulations, but did you know that they can be just as beneficial used on their own? Some of you may still be wary of using oil on your skin, but don’t be. Choosing the right oil for you skin type, which you can do – here – is all you need to find the perfect plant oil that will benefit you the most. There are tons to choose from for any skin type from dry to sensitive to oily. I can’t believe it’s been exactly one year today since I started this blog. In the beginning, I thought it would be all about promoting my handmade beauty products that I sell on Etsy, but then it turned into my tips on beauty, fashion, health and fitness and reviews on other products I love. I found out I like blogging more than I like making beauty and skincare products and that there are so many fantastic people in the blogging community that my experience wouldn’t have been the same without. I want to thank everyone who follows this blog, reads it and comments, and who genuinely gives a crap about what I write here. When it’s so cloudy and cold out, we often times think that we don’t really need to apply sunscreen, but that couldn’t be further from the truth because, in fact, most sun damage and cancer causing rays penetrate through clouds and will still do a number on your skin if you don’t take the necessary steps to protect your skin from aging and pigmentation as well as skin cancer. So, with that being said, protect your skin and do it daily, not just at the beach, and onto my review! 😉

I’ve recently been testing out this new 100% natural sunscreen for the past month or so and I really like it thus far.

Previously, I had been using Vive Sana (for that review, check here), but I ran out of it and haven’t really had the time or money to re-purchase it. To be honest, I really like both of them and they both have their pros and cons.

First of all, the Eco Logical Skin Sunscreens are really lovely. Unlike most natural sunscreens, these aren’t overwhelmingly thick and actually spread really well. They take a minute or so to set into the skin and the white cast is not so glaringly obvious, but there’s none of the struggle I usually experience when using most naturally sunscreens. This one actually fades a bit once it’s massaged into the skin. As I said, you do have to let it sit for a minute and then the white cast fades out, but be careful not to over apply because then you will have a white cast. I did that the other day and it left too much white sunscreen cast in my brows. Ew. My B.

Anyway, the formula has little to no scent and none of the chemically sunscreen smell I remember from my childhood (which I am hopelessly fond of due to nostalgia LOL). It’s really inoffensive and I think, for this reason, it would be fantastic for sensitive skin and babies. It also hasn’t made me break out at all which some sunscreens have done to me in the past and that’s certainly something I can appreciate.

Where this line of sunscreens really shine is in the hydration and spread-ability department because nearly all natural sunscreens I’ve tried have been seriously difficult to spread onto skin and even harder to blend. This one is really not at all difficult to apply. It spreads really easily onto skin and soaks in reasonably quickly, though the minimal white cast takes a minute or so to go away as long as you don’t over apply.

Also, these sunscreens are super hydrating to the skin because they include lots of beneficial plant oils including avocado and jojoba oil. The only thing I consider a somewhat con to these sunscreens is that they are not organic or GMO free and that’s kind of an important factor to some. If you just want the sunscreen to be 100% natural and made from beneficial ingredients, then this is a fantastic, solid line of sustainable and eco friendly sunscreens. They don’t include chemical sunscreens like conventional sun protection products, only a high concentration of zinc oxide (22%) . They are broad spectrum ( UVA / UVB ), water resistant, and are fragrance free and non-comedogenic ( will not clog pores ).

So, I recently posted this image on Instagram ( Follow Me @StorybookBeauty! ) so people could see what my weekly workout routine consists of. Some people thought I was completely insane ( I’m looking at you F00dVentures! :-P) while others seemed impressed by my dedication to a fitness schedule. Personally, I’ve simply found what works best for me, given my work schedule and time constraints. I didn’t want to sit there forever going, I just don’t have the time, because I know that that would be a total lie. That being said, I also want to make time to live, sleep, rest, and enjoy myself so this is what seems to be working the best for me. It might seem like a lot, but actually, I feel like I have a LOT more time, especially in the morning. I can go work out, come home and actually sit down to eat a nice breakfast. I can make a few smoothies, put the finishing touches on my lunch and snacks, and leisurely walk upstairs for a shower. It’s nice. 

And, the most shocking bit of all? I actually enjoy getting up in the morning now!

Now, I know, I know, if you’ve been following me, you may have a bit of an idea of just how much of a not morning person I am. or was?  And you may be a bit shocked to hear that I actually enjoy getting up now. I know – it’s weird for me too.

The weirdest part about this is (aside from the fact that I may actually be slowly turning into a morning person) that I think the most helpful tip I’ve been using to do all of this is that I have literally been sleeping in my gym clothes. Now, I’ve done other things to prepare myself and leave myself with literally no excuse so that I absolutely have to get up, but I know that this is one of the most helpful things I’ve done because I feel like it gets me into the mindset of working out and  cements my plans into stone (figuratively, obviously) because it’s like – If I don’t get up to workout, I am going to feel like I complete moron for sleeping in my workout clothes. 

I also think it helps a lot because, with the freezing cold weather we’ve been having, I am less and less inclined to want to undress and then change into gym clothes in the morning. It’s quite nice to just be ready to go. I don’t sleep in my sport bra, though, because that would be kind of uncomfortable for me so that’s the only thing I do change into in the morning, other than putting my shoes on.

Other things that I’ve done to prepare for waking up early include:

  • Setting 5 Alarms at 5-10 minute intervals of each other. Looks like this: 4:25 AM, 4:30 AM, 4:40 AM 
  • Sleeping in My Gym Clothes.
  • Leaving Running Shoes by the Door.
  • Prepping My Lunch & Snacks the Day Before.
  • Carrying a Water Canteen/Bottle.
  • Going With A Workout Buddy.
  • Deciding I Am Going to Do it , No Excuses.

Aside from sleeping in my gym clothes, I’ve been going each morning with my boyfriend’s cousin so it’s helpful to have a person there who is encouraging you ( or bullying, if needed LOL) to get up when you don’t particularly feel like it. Also, I think I’ve just reached the point where I decided this is what I’m going to do and that’s it. I didn’t give myself an out by saying or even thinking “I might do this” or “If I feel okay, I’ll do this,” because there’s too much room there for me to back out. I just firmly planned everything out as detailed as I could and organized everything toward that goal with no options to back out and I’ve been pretty successful in this plan thus far. I’ve only taken a few breaks midweek (usually around Wednesday) when I’ve gone to bed too late and just simply been too exhausted to go, but I’ve made up for the lost day on the weekend somehow or in the evening.  It does seem to be working, too, because I’m on week 3, going strong, and I’ve lost 6 pounds so far and find myself getting up every morning with less and less trouble every day.

If you’re like me and have trouble rising early, but really want to do it, then don’t give up! Keep trying different tactics and, if you’re really set on doing it, then you can and will.

And, if all else fails, just sleep in your gym clothes.

So, you know that feeling: it’s Tuesday, yet I still feel sluggish, unmotivated, and tired. I don’t want to work out at all, but yet, I do. I know if I don’t I’ll have that negative self-talk to battle in the back of my mind and the nagging disappointment in the pit of my stomach, but the junk I ate over the weekend is taking it’s toll. I feel less than motivated to get going again.

What do you do when you’re feeling like utter crap, but you know you need to get up and go to keep your goals in order? I personally look for any and all motivating photos, quotes and plans I can find ASAP! I know, it sounds a bit cheesy, but it really does help get me in the mood. And if my diet has been less than stellar the past weekend, I get back on track with morning fruit (or plain yogurt w/ PB) and a light sandwich or salad for lunch. Aside from that, I start downing cups of water like my life depends on it. I know it sounds extreme, but if I feel fatigued, water really does help pick me up a bit.

How do you get/stay motivated to work out?

I’m back again with an update on my Insanity workout progress and thoughts.

So, I should start off by saying that my boyfriend and I decided a week or so ago that we would bounce around and do at least 3-5 of the Insanity workout DVDs to try them all out and get a bit better at them before going the full 60 day plan straight through.

Since starting, I’ve certainly seen my body change for the better. I don’t know about much more pounds lost as 1. ) I haven’t been tracking that too strictly and 2. ) our calories haven’t been on a strict plan as of yet. What I can note on is that I have less pudge on my legs, arms and abdomen areas. I have more strength and stamina and I’m able to make it through to the end of most of the workouts on most days. They are still really hard and challenging, but it’s a process.

Another thing to note is that I notice my increased stamina, strength and endurance more when I’m doing other workouts or exercises that used to be difficult. Take suicides. These used to make me feel like I was going to literally die…or, you know, pass out.

Then yesterday, I was doing the Cardio Power & Resistance DVD workout when I noticed, suicides aint sh*t to me anymore!

I know, it may not be something to get super excited over, but I understand that little things make up big results over time and that is a little side effect that I feel really proud of!

Aside from my euphoria over this realization, I also wanted to mention that after a few months of testing the waters on the Insanity DVD’s and trying out all the workouts, getting better at them and really deciding we want to commit to doing them, my boyfriend and I have come up with a proper eating plan for the 60 days finally and will begin this weekend with our plan.

Our plan includes eating the bare minimum of carbs with lots of protein and veggies. So, I don’t want you all to think we’ll be starving ourselves because that’s certainly not the case nor is it our goal to starve to death. We do want to be on a more strict regimen of eating, though, because we’re both excited to get the most out of the 60 day Insanity plan and see those results!

And we both secretly want free t-shirts haha.

Anyway, so that’s where I’m at with Insanity at the moment!

Personally, the weather over here is finally cooling down again after a week of high temperatures ( Thank you Lord!)  and everyone is really happy about that, but it’s put me in the cold weather mood because now all I want to do is cook and bake things.

Ever since discovering kale chips a few years back, I’m always on the prowl for new recipes that include kale in them. Kale is super good for you and a great way to get your greens this winter since kale is in season!

I’ve been eyeing this one since Summer and I think maybe I’ll try it this Winter, even if it means braving the cold and grilling outside. It just looks delicious!

Fabulous Fall Salads

I think this one is a fantastic idea! Salads often drop off the menu during fall and winter months, but I like that they help incorporate seasonal fruits and veggies into salads to make them more approachable during the colder season and keep your health on track, no?

Skinny Pumpkin Spice Latte

I would have this one anytime since I love coffee, but I’ll take the skinny version any day over the calorie-laden original. Seriously, did you know Starbucks puts basically 10% coffee and the rest is water and added sugar and creams? At least if you make yourself the low calorie version, you’ll be guaranteed the caffeine you want and the great taste without the added sugar.

I could lie and say this is a great way to get your protein in after a workout (and it might be, but that’s certainly not my motive!), but in reality I just want a guilt-free excuse to drink my pumpkin pie! Yep! Oh! and get that protein after my workout 🙂

Fall Metabolism Boosting Drink

I really love this idea as I’m quite obsessed with infusing my water with fruits and veggies these days! They offer added vitamins and nutrients when you want to not only stay hydrated, but also get some added flavor in regular water. This one adds some nice flavor and spice that has a lovely wintry theme to it! I will definitely be trying this one sometime soon!
