I was recently sent a sample of this Intensive-C® Vitamin C Face Radiance Peel by Murad Skincare from The Beauty Box, a lovely online beauty retailer, which sells a number of popular and unique niche indie beauty products at great prices. I really love the site’s wishlist function which, once you set up an account, allows you to save the products you want to a wish list for later. I’m kind of obsessed with wish lists because they’re handy for keeping track of all the things I want, especially when it comes to beauty things.

Anyway, I was super excited to try this out as I’ve been praising Dr. Murad and his skin philosphies on this blog since the early days. If you weren’t with us yet, do check out this post and this post to learn more about Dr. Howard Murad’s awesome views on beauty and health. Otherwise, try out this delicious smoothie recipe from his book.

So, since receiving this from the lovely ladies of The Beauty Box a few weeks ago, I’ve tested it out several times and I am really happy to report back to you that this face peel works really well and surprisingly fast. It comes out of the squeeze tube easily enough and you can control how much comes out given it’s in a tube which I really like as I hate to waste product. It looks pretty much like a face lotion and you apply a thin layer to your face after cleansing. Then, you leave it on for up to 10 minutes and rinse off with a warm wash cloth. The feel of this isn’t nearly as noticeable as the Liquid Gold from Alpha-H which has a noticeable tingle to it. I don’t know if this will offer similar long term results to that, but it’s certainly a more gentle option for those who can’t bear the tingle of Alpha-H’s glycolic acid products. If you prefer a more natural peel option, check here.

This peel, as many of the products in the Intensive-C® line from Murad, utilizes a number of beneficial ingredients for the skin including glycolic acid and vitamin C which work to slough off dead skin cells and fight off free radical damage brought on by stress, pollution and UV rays to reveal a brighter, healthier complexion. They also utilize a variety of natural essential oils, plant extracts, clays and amino acids to help heal and encourage cell turnover and collagen production.

The difference between before and after using this is like night and day for me. I tried it a few weeks ago, for the first time, not thinking it’d be too effective, but I was really surprised that the effects seemed so immediately noticeable on my skin. After I rinsed the peel off, my skin looked instantly brighter, clearer, and felt softer and smoother. I’m not sure how they’re doing it all, but it really does work time and again as I’ve now used it several times and can attest to the consistent results this delivers. Not only that, but I do think it has actually improved my skin for the better and would certainly recommend it to those battling dullness, acne scarring or hyperpigmentation or brown spots, and other discoloration. Although I wish this was a more natural formula, the results are undeniable.

What Are Your Thoughts on At=Home Peels Vs. Spa Type Peels?

I’d Love to Know Your Thoughts on this!

Happy Friday Lovelies!

Today’s post focuses on my top picks for facial masks. This is one area which was a bit of a no brainer for me because I have a clear set of masks that just do the trick for my trouble at any given moment and these are it. Highly recommend them, definitely read my original review(s) for those interested, and I hope it helps keep your skin in great shape in 2013!

First on the list is the Alpha-H Liquid Gold Smoothing and Perfecting Face Mask. This face mask is incredible for TONS of skin issues including but not limited to acne, dullness, fine lines, dry skin, scarring, and pigmentation (brown spots). I don’t recommend using this anywhere near the eyes so make sure there is a wide berth from your eyes and the face mask as the skin on your eyes is thinner than the rest of your face and is more likely to suffer from irritation. This mask is seriously potent so I don’t recommend this for sensitive skin as it has a very noticeable tingle to it! If your skin can handle it, it is well worth the temporary discomfort, though, because it feels a bit like a mini peel in that your skin feels instantly softer, clearer, cleaner and brighter after using this face mask. Like many of the Alpha-H products, this utilizes the magic that is glycolic acid at a substantial 15% and is used for exfoliating dead skin cells and encouraging cell turnover while  manuka honey, lavender and vitamin E which work to protect, hydrate and calm fresh cells.

I highly recommend this one for those with trouble skin or those battling dullness, pigmentation or scarring. Although it’s a bit pricey, it’s well worth it, in my opinion!

You can check out my original post on this face mask here.

Golden Root Purifying Mud Mask

Next on the list is the Wei Beauty Purify Chi Golden Root Purifying Mud Mask. This mask is fantastic for those with clogged pores, acne, dry skin, and oily skin. It does wonders for me in hot weather when I’ve been oilier than usual and have a few spots. It definitely has a bit of that tingling sensation, though not nearly as intense as the Alpha-H one. Also, the mask itself is formulated with many natural botanical extracts including Golden Root, Chrysanthemum, and Reishi Mushroom to brighten, purify and de-clog pores. Als, these little pots of face mask will last for about 2-3 face masks each so it does last quite a long time, even if you like to layer it on. I love that applying this mask feels like your very own mini day spa and it works at a level of intensity that most skin types can handle and that is much less intense than the Alpha-H. I don’t know that I’d recommend it for sensitive skin types; if I were you, I’d try to see if you can get your hands on a sample and do a patch test first. You can see my original post on this mask here.

dairyface

This is probably one of the more unique natural beauty brands I’ve reviewed this past year and with good reason! Dairyface use totally fresh ingredients to keep your face, body and everything else in tip top shape! Their products are all made with a natural base of yogurt cultured from milk produced by grass-fed cows in order to offer your skin an optimal level of omega 3’s, probiotics, prebiotics, and other vitamins. This base in then blended with various herbs to treat different skin issues including redness, irritation, acne, dryness, clogged pores, and dull skin. I love how gentle, yet effective these products are as face masks! Plus, since they have to be refrigerated, they offer instant relief to skin suffering from irritation, redness or dryness. The lactic acid in the milk gently exfoliates skin while also calming it with herbs and using the proteins in the milk to plump and hydrate cells. I think this type of product is perfect for any and all skin types (do a patch test first if you’re unsure!) and one that anyone can definitely benefit from. I have also used these products as a body mask and a hair mask which really softened and hydrated both my hair and body. My only recommendation is be sure to use another body wash and shampoo after these to rinse Dairyface full out otherwise you’ll smell later and have dried milk around on your skin and hair! suticleanseorganicbalm

This last one is one of my favorite all around multi-use beauty products of 2012. It is just such a seriously fantastic product that does so many things and would work for nearly any skin type, including sensitive and acne prone types. It is first and foremost an organically certified cleanse balm which includes many hydrating oils and valuable essential oils which work to cleanse, calm, rejuvenate and moisturize the skin all at once. Since it is also quite hydrating, it can work as a cleanser & moisturizer in one and since it comes with a natural muslin cloth, you can actually get mild exfoliation when you use it to remove the cleansing balm. Aside from that, this balm also works as a face mask and definitely helps to hydrate dry skin. When my skin gets that ugly, tight and dry feeling, I just literally pop a thin layer of this on and my skin instantly feels fuller, smoother, softer and yes, more hydrated. I love this cleansing balm for everything and IT WORKS . Try it, you won’t regret it. To see my original post on this cleanse balm, check here.

Stay tuned for a few more of these “Best of Beauty 2012” posts as I’ll be doing a few more for body and nails.

Have a Great Weekend!

I just got this in my email and I’m so excited!

It seems like it’s been too long since I’ve had a chance to purchase from JB what with work, product reviews, and all that madness and I can’t think of a better time to purchase some of my favorites!

My favorite face wash from them – the JB Organic Face Wash, which I reviewed here, is likely one I’d pick up again. Some other favorites include their Blemish Clearing Serum (not sure why I haven’t done a review of this one!),  Blemish Clearing Cleanser, Green Apple Peel (Full Strength), Soothing Serum, Oil Free Moisturizer & their Organic Facial Rejuvenating Mask Their Stem Cellular Repair Moisturizer is good for dry- combination to dry skin types. Their Green Apple Firming Body Moisturizer is also really good! I’ll have to make a mental note to do reviews on all of these or let me know if you want them reviewed!

Get Your Milk ‘Stache On With Fresh & Natural Dairyface Nourishing Facial Refreshers!

I have to admit that I’ve been meaning to post on these for awhile now, but I needed to test them all out first and experiment a bit to give the best feedback so that’s my excuse for not doing this until now and I’m sticking to it!

Anyway, these were sent for review by Dairyface and they’ve been very generous to send me samples of all of what they’re calling Nourishing Facial Refreshers, but they are seriously much more than that.

First off, they are as fresh as skincare can get in my opinion. They are composed of milk (of course) which includes loads of vitamins (A, B12, C, D & E), proteins, peptides, lactic acid, and probiotics and prebiotics to heal, calm, nourish and hydrate skin. Each NFR includes different herbs – Lavender Lovely (Lavender), Peppermint Creme (Peppermint), etc. These really just smell and look like yogurt for the most part, though there is a subtle scent of herbs underneath that as well. Since all of these are pretty much yogurt, they must be kept in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use them and they last about 1-2 months. They’re sent to you quickly in an insulated package so they stay cool and fresh. Also, although they say single use on the little containers (you receive 2 per pack), they last a lot more uses than that. I’ve seriously piled this stuff onto my face just to see how much of it I could use up and there was still a lot left in the container even after that. I would say these could last from 4 uses to 8, depending on how much of it you use at any one time.

This is me with the Peppermint Creme NFR on and I’ve seriously piled it on as much as I could, including on my neck. Below is the container after I’ve used it twice and you can see I still have a lot left.

So, each of these NFR’s has a different purpose, though they all seem generally the same in texture, feel and overall scent (yogurt). The Lavender Lovely does have an edge of subtle lavender scent and really helped to calm breakouts. If I was experiencing redness, I’ve gone and massaged it into my face for a minute before smoothing it over my face as a mask and leaving it on for 20 minutes before rinsing. Due to the lactic acid, there is some mild redness after, but it goes away within a few minutes and there’s no irritation. Just be sure to really rinse this off otherwise you will have peeling dried milk on your skin and it’s kind of annoying so yeah, rinse well.

Although each of these is really cooling and relaxing because they are kept in the fridge, the Peppermint Creme one is especially relieving and relaxing to use and has a nice minty edge to it under the usual yogurt smell which I really like. I also find this one is great for breakouts and irritation as well. I’ve also found I love any of these in hot weather because they’re like instant relief from the heat…and now I’m wishing I had one on now. They’re that relaxing. Eye Caramba is specially formulate for underneath the eyes, but I’ve used it all over my face as well with great results. This one is specifically made to tighten, lighten and smooth fine lines around your eyes, though, and I think it does have some nice effects when used for this.

The Glad Allover is an interesting one. All of these can be used on both the face and body, but this one is specifically designed as a scrub for both face and body. I did try it once and it certainly does soften the skin, hydrate and gently exfoliate. I even used it as a hair mask to really great effects, but I recommend a few things to avoid some nasty smells later. First, if you use it on only your face and body, be sure to use an alternative body wash or soap after using this. Second, if you use this as a hair mask, you will need to shampoo your hair twice and condition once really well to make sure it’s all out of your hair. This is because if you leave any residue and there’s any amount of heat or humidity (I did this test on a super hot night), you will smell like rotting milk. It was not a pleasant smell to wake up to; in fact, I immediately showered because it was so gross. I don’t want to deter you from trying this out as a hair mask or body scrub because the effects are awesome, but you really can’t go without rinsing this off a few times with another soap given the nature of the ingredients. So that’s all I’m saying.

Lastly, I tried the Green Tea Magic. Very calming, a little herbal, and just as cooling as the others, this one is also great for irritation, calm skin and the caffeine in it will plump cells and reduce puffiness.

Overall, I really love these Nourishing Facial Refreshers from Dairyface!

They are truly a nice treat for the skin! Although they cost $26.99 for 2 “single use” packs, they actually go about 4-8 uses, depending on how much you use each time. I will definitely be using and purchasing these lovelies as long as they’re available. They make my skin feel super soft, hydrated, and they really do help with breakouts, especially the ones that feel really sore. They seem to bring the swelling down on those ones. Living in a hot climate, I also love that these are kept in the fridge because they feel so relaxing and “refreshing” to use as they are really cool going on. Also, they sent me a nice insulated bag to keep these lovelies in so that they’re always super cold. These are definitely worth a look if you’re into more natural face mask and treatment options.

Willa Natural Fresh Face Cucumber Face Mask Mini Review

I have been eyeing Willa Naturals’ products for quite awhile.

If you’re unfamiliar, Willa Naturals was made to help offer a fun line of natural skincare products to girls at affordable prices.

They have a great lines of features in their products that anyone trying to go more natural with their routine will appreciate, whether you’re 15 or 40.

Check Out the Stats:

  • Paraben Free
  • Proplyene Glycol Free
  • Sulfate Free
  • DEA Free and Phthalate Free
  • Not Tested on Animals
  • Made in the USA

As such a big fan of their natural and simple line of products for girls, I jumped at the chance to try samples of their Fresh Face Cucumber Face Mask.

I know their products are mainly marketed to younger girls, but hey, a face mask is a face mask is a face mask and I want to try them all, especially the cucumber ones!

Included in this awesome face mask are ingredients such as Kaolin, Montmorillonite, Witch Hazel, and Cucumber Extract.

It is mainly meant for young teen girls experiencing acne breakouts, unclog pores, and oiliness.

I really love this face mask!

It is SO awesome for detoxing the skin; after I used this mask, my pores looked smaller, more clear and any redness was calm.

It definitely helped clear breakouts for me as well.

One thing to keep in mind is that this mask brings all breakouts and would-be breakouts to the surface of the skin so you may have a day or so where you have a few spots on your face, but after that, your skin will be clear and calm.

I truly love the results this face mask gave me! Even though it is marketed to younger girls, it should be for anyone who has acne prone skin or anyone who needs to combat hormonal breakouts. It works really well and doesn’t dry the skin out at all even though it does help unclog your pores.

Not only that, but this mask is SO affordable!

It only costs $1.75 USD for a small .33 Oz Foil, but I used one of these on 3 different occasions so the value is huge on this.

I highly recommend this mask, whether you’re battling teen skin breakouts, adult acne or hormonal.

It works, it’s super affordable and budget friendly, and the ingredients are pretty great as well.

Easy Face Masks, Scrubs & Enzyme Peel Recipes Straight from Your Kitchen

A lot of times, I think people forget or maybe don’t even realize how simply it can be to enjoy the luxuries of a face mask, scrub or peel, even if you can’t afford to purchase one from the store.

Because of this, I thought I’d draw up a list so you can see exactly how many ingredients you likely have sitting in your pantry or refrigerator at this very moment that you could easily use in your beauty regimen!

Here are Some of My Favorites:

Oatmeal is one of the easiest and most obtainable face mask ingredients. You can mix it with water, milk or honey and blend it to form a paste or simply mix it with water and use it as a scrub. Oatmeal is great for sensitive skin types and those battling rosacea and redness. As a mask, apply to your face for 5-10 minutes and rinse.

Strawberries are great for brightening and toning the skin and they work wonders on acne. Blend a couple in a food processor or mash them by hand with some honey or a little water. Use as a scrub and the seeds will give you nice scrubbing action, but be sure t be gentle about it! As a mask, apply to your face for 5-10 minutes and rinse.

Yogurt is awesome for a number of skin concerns. It can work well at calming redness, cooling skin irritations, acne, and it gently exfoliates the skin as a mask. Make sure you use the plain variety, preferably plain Greek yogurt with full fat. Apply to your face for 5-10 minutes and rinse.

Milk probably seems like a really strange thing to be putting on your face, but it works wonders as a gentle exfoliant! The lactic acid in milk helps slough off dead skin cells without causing irritation, but make sure you choose an organic variety to avoid any hormones or steroids that can be found in conventional milk. All you have to do is brush a thin layer onto your face, leave for 5-10 minutes and rinse. Your skin should feel softer and brighter instantly!

Many acidic fruits such as pineapple, papaya, oranges and even apples offer mild exfoliation, brightening and enyzmes to encourage cell turnover for your skin.  Apples may be especially beneficial due to quercetin which is found naturally in apples and can be used to prevent premature aging, acne, and a host of other benefits. Blend a small amount of any of these fruits, apply a thin layer to face for 5-10 minutes and rinse. Try to use organic to avoid pesticides.

Cucumbers are very calming. A lot of people use slices on the eyes to calm redness and under eye puffiness, but you can also blend them to use in a cooling face mask. My favorite is blending cucumbers, fresh sage and some water for a very refreshing and cooling face mask. This will help with redness, acne, and puffiness. You can also use this as a really nice toner during the summer, but be sure to keep your toner spray bottle in the fridge to make it last longer!

Eggs are great for a myriad of skin needs. Egg whites are great applied as a firming face mask because they have a temporary tightening and lifting effect on the skin. Simply separate egg whites from the yolk and apply the whites in a thin layer on your face. Leave until dried and then either gently peel off or rinse with warm water. You can also use the yolk in eggs if you need extra moisture.

For a Face Scrub, you can add sea salt, brown sugar, or baking soda to any of these recipes. If you have drier skin, you may want to add a bit of extra virgin olive oil to the recipe.

That’s all for now!

Coming Soon! Organic Manuka Honey & Bee Venom Face Masks

Lately in the skincare world, especially in the world of high end high priced (or overpriced as I like to say), there has been a LOT of talk about Bee Venom masks, the  exotic benefits of Manuka Honey and the anti aging, anti acne, and overall skin health benefits this sort of mask can offer. Reviews are in for the Bee Venom mask by Manuka Doctor and people love it.

So I thought, why not offer a similar bee venom mask myself including certified organic manuka honey with bee venom, natural and organic oils, and natural botanical powders, clays and extracts that will give you the same benefits that the whopping $86 Manuka Doctor Bee Venom mask promises consumers without the hefty price tag.

After bouncing this idea off friends, family and customers, I have decided that this is definitely going to be something I want to offer customers, especially those who want a product that works just as well if not better than the high end, overpriced masks, but for a fraction of the price.

I will be doing a focus group trial run in the coming weeks to perfect a formulation so if anyone is interested in trying the product and answering questions for me, you get a free sample size amount of the product to test on yourself and then answer a questionnaire for me.

Feel free to email me at tiannasicilia@yahoo.com if you’re interested for more information.

Thanks!
