You won’t believe what I’ve been using as an all natural deodorant!

It’s not any particular product you can buy because, despite how much I like natural deodorant in the winter, they are not effective enough to use in the hot California summer.

I’ve been using lemons! I know the photo is of limes, but that’s because my BFF (AKA best friend FOH-EVA) recommended that I try limes. The thing is, I only had lemons on hand so I used those instead and they work just as well.

How Does This All Work?

Easy!

You simply cut a small slice of lemon or lime, whichever you have on hand, and rub it lightly in your under arm area. Let it dry for a few seconds and then go on your way!

That’s LITERALLY it and it TOTALLY WORKS!

I didn’t believe it either when she told me, but suspend your judgment until you try it for yourself.

It’s super cheap, eco and really surprisingly effective!

The natural benefits of this are that the citrus absorbs all of the bacteria in your under arm area ( which is what makes you smell bad, by the way ) so you don’t have a particular scent, but you definitely don’t smell AT ALL.

I wore this for literally 10 hours and did not smell in the least. Then I went to the gym after work for an hour and did intense circuit training and, despite being drenched in sweat, I STILL did not smell!

This definitely works and some other benefits you will see over time are lighter under arms  because the citrus will lighten the discoloration conventional deodorants have caused you over time, clear pores and smoother skin in this area, and a cleaner shave because of your smoother under arm skin!

The price of this deodorant method is less than $1 so definitely try this out – You can afford it!

Definitely let me know in the comments if you’ve tried this insanely effective and surprisingly simple “DIY” deodorant method or try it and let me know how it goes!

Skin Owl Argan Infusions

Back in late February, I wrote this post introducing Annie Tevelin, AKA the Skin Owl, and interviewing her on her lovely line of minimal, but nonetheless effective Skin Owl Argan Infusions. I’ve been testing out 3 samples that she sent me, 1 of each type of Argan Infusion available, of these lovely skin treatments and I’m happy to report back that these are just as awesome as they sound!

First off, they come in 3 different variations – Lavender, Clary Sage and Geranium. Although they are said to be suited for all skin types, each has a focus. For instance, lavender is said to be most beneficial for sensitive, oily, and acne prone skin while clary sage is said to be best for dry, mature skin types. Geranium is said to be best for combination skin types and those battling dullness. That being said, they are all safe for use on all skin types and I can attest to that because I’ve used all 3 of them on my sensitive, acne prone, combination skin with lovely results.

Argan Infusion: Lavender

They all come in lovely, yet simple dropper bottles and each has a different, but pleasant scent. My favorite is the lavender because I find it really relaxing and I got the best results with it, given it’s most recommended for my skin type. That being said, the others worked well also, but the results were less noticeable.

These all absorb almost immediately into the skin, leaving no residue behind, though a slight after thought of their given scents remain for a bit then fade after 30 or so minutes. Overnight, the results are pretty noticeable. Acne looks calmer and more diminished, redness and pigmentation look more calm and even which gives the skin more clarity, and the skin just looks much better on the whole.

One thing I will say is that if you have very dry skin, I would recommend this be used in conjunction with a more intense moisturizer or balm like Suti’s Organic Purity Balm or something as this is not moisturizing enough, in my opinion, for dry patches. I do think it’s plenty enough for combination to oily skin types, though, especially in Spring and Summer months. For dry skin types or in the Winter if you’ve experienced patchiness, you will need to layer a cream or balm over this. That being said, the results will still be apparent as I’ve used these both alone on the skin and underneath a skin balm with the same results.

Aside from use on the face, this can also be used to treat dryness  on the body, decollete and hands, though, again, you may need to layer a heavier balm if you’re battling serious dryness. For simple things like elbow patchiness, though, this will do fine alone. I had the best results with the Geranium Argan Infusion for skin dryness, but I think any one of these would work well. I also used the Clary Sage Argan Infusion on the ends of my hair which helped tame some flyaways really nicely and on the bottom of my feet. No idea if it had much effect on my feet, but the scent and feeling of it was nice and relaxing before bed! You’ll likely get best results on your feet is you apply a few drops and then put on socks before bedtime. I also used the Lavender Argan Infusion to heal some little cuts and a small oven burn I’d gotten on my hands and it really helped them to heal and diminish a LOT faster than if left to heal in their own time.

Overall, these Argan Infusions work superbly {yep I said that} and I’d highly recommend them to anyone and everyone who has skin concerns that need tending to – these are just the treatments to get the job done!

Annie Tevelin – the Skin Owl

SkinOwl

I recently discovered a new beauty brand called SkinOwl – a beauty brand created by the Skin Owl herself, Annie Tevelin. After years of working in the beauty industry and experiencing the empty promises of many over priced and often ineffective cosmetic brands, the Skin Owl (Annie’s alter ego)  was created as a way to fight off Annie’s skin problems in a natural, yet effective way that was affordable, honest and simple. The goal is for SkinOwl to be a voice of truth in the beauty industry. I was very lucky to be able to pick the Skin Owl’s brain and share a bit of her brilliance and philosophy on beauty – Read on for my interview with her!

Argan Infusion: Lavender

Argan Infusion: Lavender

How did you first get into beauty?

I was so enthralled with skincare and makeup as a child. Every time I went shopping with my mother I would wander off to the cosmetics department. The women were so pretty, so put together. They were my first beauty mentors. I would go from counter to counter asking for tips and tricks and I was no more than 10! I was a sponge, taking everything in at such a young age. All the colors and textures. I was enamored. I’m convinced makeup taught me what color was way before Crayola. It wasn’t until I turned 25 that I decided to change careers and take a risk on a long-lost dream.

When did you create your alter ego, the Skin Owl, and what is the meaning behind the name itself?

SkinOwl was created in 2011 and was born to fill a void in the cosmetics industry. Like many of my clients, I spent a lot of money on products and treatments that didn’t work. Dermatologists cost me a lot of money and most of what they prescribed irritated my skin in the long run. When I thought about all of the women who might feel overwhelmed or lost when shopping for products, and with so many products available to them, I knew I had something to offer them with my experience. It just made sense for me to help people the best I could to look and feel their most beautiful. SkinOwl defines beautiful skin, wisdom, and truth as one entity.

Argan Infusion: Clary Sage

I’ve done a bit of reading about your products and I know that they include what you call the Argan Infusion. What exactly is the Argan Infusion and why is it so beneficial to skin?

Argan Infusion is a luxurious facial oil that can be used as a treatment or moisturizer on the face, nails and body. It comes in three infusions, Lavender, Geranium, and Clary Sage, each of which cater to different skin concerns. I’m not interested in creating “fluffy” products. I only want to offer healthy ingredients in products that work & Argan Infusion is a prime example of that. The anti-inflammatory properties are noticed after one day. The skin’s luminosity and radiance is restored in less than a week. And within a month, most people claim that they’ve never seen their skin look so youthful and balanced. It’s exciting to watch!

Argan Infusion: Geranium

Why is beauty integrity so important to you, not only as a person, but as a brand?
Integrity is the most important thing a person can have. It makes or breaks a person’s character. I’ve always wanted my personal life to mirror my professional life. I can’t imagine seeking a healthy lifestyle, having a positive outlook, and trying to achieve balance in my personal life without wanting the same for my company. SkinOwl has allowed me take what I find important and apply it elsewhere, so that it hopefully brings out the best in others.
And finally, please describe your idea of true beauty in one word or phrase.
“True beauty has nothing to hide. Feeling beautiful, not looking beautiful, is the key. “
– the Skin Owl

Thanks so much to the Skin Owl for her lovely and honest interview!

SteamCream Xmas Tins

Happy Friday Everyone!

I hope you’ve all had a lovely week & on to another fabulous weekend!

For some reason, I’ve just been exhausted this week and staying up a bit too late doing random things like attempting to make ice cream (weird for winter, I know) and creating a yogurt pie (because it needed to be done).  So I’ll be pulling the covers over my head til Sunday, getting in some much needed sleep this weekend, but on to today’s post!

Joy to The World

Joy to The World

I’ve been in love with the beautiful tins from Steamcream ever since they sent me a sample of Chagrin earlier this year (see my review on that – here) and I’ve been fawning over their Christmas themed tins along with all of their other tin designs which are all brilliant and uniquely scented! Their creams are very precisely steam-infused with a variety of essential oils, natural plant oils and a calming infusion of oatmeal which offers a very unique cream for even the most sensitive skin types. What I really love about their tins (other than their impressive ingredients) is that they have lovely designs on them that are cute, unique and fun and the tins screw closed instead of most creams which come in a tin that you have to push together and which become harder and harder to open as time goes on. Their tins shut tightly and can safely roll around in your bag without worry of them spilling everywhere.

Chagrin and Brugge Gift Set

Chagrin and Brugge Gift Set

Single Steamcreams would make lovely stocking stuffers and they also offer a number of adorably designed gift sets for those looking for a fully fledged gift. Aside from that, they are also eco friendly, made with sustainable ingredients, and they are vegan, cruelty free, and use recycled materials for their packaging. As if that’s not enough, they also hand craft their Steamcreams fresh in the UK and Japan with minimal preservatives for the most body friendly skin emulsion that’s instantly absorbed into the skin!

Some of their tins and gift sets seem to be on sale at the moment so definitely take advantage of that while you can!

They offer tons of uniquely designed tins in their online shop – here.

If you’re in the US, you can also get them from Beauty Habit, if you like – here.

Have you tried SteamCream?

What are you getting your friends and family for Christmas?

Do you ever get tired of using a million and one products to treat every single skin issue on the planet? Hyper-pigmentation, scarring, dullness, hydration, acne, redness, the list goes on. What if I told you you could get away with using only ONE moisturizer year round with a few tiny adjustments and it could treat a variety of your skin concerns at any given moment and for a lot less money?

Today’s post is going to show those of you who wish to keep their skincare routine to a minimum how to do just that using 1 moisturizer and a few additives to keep on hand to transform your basic moisturizer into anything you want.

The concept for this is super easy, really. Choose a basic moisturizer that you like, that doesn’t irritate your skin, and keep it super simple. As a basic moisturizer, I’ve been using the Philosophy Keep the Peace Moisturizer as it’s quite basic and includes some nice extracts for keeping the skin calm. Once you’ve chosen your basic moisturizer, you’ll want to pick up a few additives, depending on your skin issues and/or concerns. I’ve listed a few above to give you an idea of the kind of additives you may want to include, but depending on what your concern is, you may need to adjust.

Before I get into anything, please remember to take extreme care when using essential oils in this way. Using them undiluted on the skin can do a lot of damage so know your limits. I am not a doctor, dermatologist, etc. nor am I qualified to give medical advice. I am only sharing what has worked for me and my skin so, if you’re unsure, please consult your primary care physician and/or dermatologist before trying any of these methods as outlined below.

First off, the most basic of the basics is tea tree essential oil. It’s so versatile and it can do a number of things, especially for those who battle breakouts. The first thing you can do is use it as a spot treatment by tapping a very tiny amount directly onto any pimples, blackheads, etc. Another way to use it is if you have a ton of breakouts and you want like an “acne all-over treatment” type moisturizer, mix 1-2 drops of it in with a small amount of your basic moisturizer and apply it liberally on your face, neck, etc. Wherever you’re broken out. It will feel tingly and cooling for a bit, but once it’s dry, it goes away. If not, rinse immediately. Also, this all- over type treatment also works well as a balancer for the skin. It will semi-mattify, but not dry out your skin. If it dries your skin out, you’re using too much essential oil & need to tone down on the amount you’re using.

Another good essential oil for balancing out the skin is also carrot seed essential oil and it’s great for both dry skin and oily skin types because it simply helps balance the skin as opposed to some others like tea tree which might be a little too oil-absorbing instead of balancing for those who have dry skin and acne. I don’t advise this for those who have sensitive skin because using essential oils like this can feel a little intense at first and it may cause you irritation. For everyone else, this may really do your skin some good. If you want to use another essential oil other than tea tree for breakouts, some good ones include rosemary, sage, or frankincense.

Next, if you have pigmentation, scarring or dullness issues, you can use the same 1-2 drops mixed into a small amount of your basic moisturizer to treat those concerns. You can use a number of essential oils such as sandalwood, orange or lemon. Any citrus fruit essential oil variety can be great for brightness. Sandalwood is especially beneficial for those who suffer from acne or who have suffered from it in the past and now deal with scarring because it treats both. Citrus essential oils will brighten skin in the same way that slathering lemon juice all over your skin would help brighten it over time.

Thirdly, if you are battling redness, rosacea, or any kind of irritation or inflammation in the skin, a lot of times, it’s best to simply leave your skin alone. You may have cause some irritation already and you want to let your skin calm down before putting more crap on it. If you absolutely must, you can apply hydrosols and that will be a good alternative. If you have no irritation, but you suffer from a lot of redness anyway, some good essential oils that help calm the skin include chamomile, calendula, lavender, and clary sage. Clary sage can also be beneficial for those who suffer from acne AND have sensitive skin.

Lastly, if you need hydration, mixing a bit of your chosen carrier oil is all your need to get that extra bit. This is especially beneficial in the fall / winter time when skin needs more nourishment due to cold weather, but it’s also good if you have a drier skin type or live in a cold climate. You don’t need to exercise too much caution with carrier oils as they are simply plant oils and not concentrated like essential oils are, but all the same, take care to choose one that’s right for your skin & the season. If you have oily skin, some light oils include grapeseed and sweet almond oil. If you have combination skin, evening primrose and grapeseed are both great. If you have dry skin, olive oil, apricot kernel, avocado and argan are all great choices. If you have normal skin, any will work, but jojoba is solid for those with neutral skin types. Remember, if you’re allergic to nuts, stay away from sweet almond and other nut oils – instead, opt for evening primrose, grapeseed or olive oil. If you have sensitive skin, grapeseed, evening primrose and rosehip all work nicely.

Personally, I use a variety of essential oils in a basic moisturizer if I’ve run out of my favorite products or I need a quick treatment and I have some days to spare before I can re-order products I like. For breakouts and oiliness, I use a bit of moisturizer with tea tree oil or I use a Q tip to spot treat blemishes. It does tingle a bit, but I’m used to it. If I need to calm my skin down, I use the moisturizer by itself with nothing else. If I need more moisture, I add a tiny bit of evening primrose oil to my moisturizer for a bit of more nourishing hydration. For scarring and dullness issues, I occasionally use lemon or grapefruit essential oil, but I mostly just have a strict 2 times exfoliation per week. Sometimes I’m lazy and I’ll just do a face mask or use my clarisonic in place of exfoliating, but it has the same effects. Otherwise, if I’m dealing with a particularly horrible skin issue (breakouts or something), I might do an intense exfoliation, but only once that week.

Just as a side note- if you have sensitive skin, you can do the added moisture step in this post, but don’t use any essential oils as many people who have sensitive skin won’t be able to handle it & it may cause irritation. If you want to try something similar, you can use hydrosols as they are less concentrated than essential oils and less likely to irritate the skin, but still offer skin benefits. You can also infuse carrier oils such as olive oil, grapeseed oil or evening primrose oil with dried plants for a few weeks or months and this will help you gain the benefits from them with little to no irritation.

IMPORTANT! If you do any of these methods, you MUST wear sunscreen as essential oils make skin sun sensitive. You don’t want to be treating pigmentation at night with EOs and then causing more during the day so DEFINITELY pack on that sunscreen!

So, I hope you found this helpful – feel free to ask me any questions you may have & I will do my best to help!

Cheap & Eco Friendly Clarisonic Alternative : The Konjac Sponge

So excited that I’ve finally been able to try one of these little beauties!

I’ve been wanting one since I did this post back in June and so when the lovely ladies from  BeautyHabit offered to send me one for review, I was SO thrilled!

Of course I had to use it the very first day when I got it in the mail and it doesn’t disappoint!

First off, I was kind of bummed I didn’t get one of the clay enhanced ones at first, but now I really like this one because it is so versatile. It’s not tied down to one skin type or whatever like the clay-enriched ones are and so any skin type can use it and it can be used with a cleanser of your choice as well which works great.

I really love this tool! It’s such a no brainer type of cleansing tool / cleanser in one. I actually think it would be especially brilliant for someone who wants an easy skin routine and even for guys because it’s exfoliating, cleansing, softening and hydrating all in one product!

The first time I used this, my face felt so super soft, refreshed, cleansed, brightened and hydrated and I used it just as it comes straight out of the packaging with no added cleansers or anything. I’ve since tried it with various cleansers, all with really nice results. I’ve also oil cleansed and then used this and it was great as well.

It’s just such an easy cleansing tool to use and although it won’t give you facial-like deep cleansing results that a Clarisonic will, this is an awesome alternative for people on a budget who want something that cleans well without any irritation or dryness! It really works well to cleanse your face in a super simple way.  You can also use this on your body as well and it’s really nice, though small, and gentle exfoliates so for those, like me, who have sensitive skin this is a nice alternative to a loofah.

I highly recommend this to anyone and everyone, especially those who want a simple routine, have very sensitive skin and also guys. This is something I will absolutely purchase (actually, ironically I have it in another tab as we speak LOL) because it’s so versatile, it can be used on anyone and it’s the easiest way to get clean skin without causing irritation or having to think too hard about it. Another thing I really dig about using this sponge is that it’s super eco friendly, 100% biodegradable and sustainable so  I don’t have to worry about any waste accumulating from my using it.

These are meant to last up to 6 months, but if they start to break down then they recommend you replace it. Also, it has kind of a very subtle strange smell to it, but it’s not too noticeable really, especially if you’re adding your own cleanser to the sponge when you use this.

Other Awesome Features of These Sponges:

  • Eco Friendly & Sustainable
  • 100% Natural konjac potato sponge
  • 100% Free of Dyes and Additives
  • 100% Biodegradable
  • Gentle On Sensitive Skin, even those with psoriasis and eczema
  • Easy to Use
  • pH Balanced
  • Various sponges for face, body and babies

As weird as it may sound (for the 1 guy or so out there who is reading this! Thanks, by the way! :-D) , I really think these would be a godsend for guys out there who want easy cleansing. I forced my boyfriend to try this, as I usually do with everything I try much to his displeasure, and he actually liked it. It’s not difficult to use and it gets the job done. You can easily pick one with your skin type and you may not even have to use a moisturizer if you don’t want (though I recommend you do use one and some sunscreen if you want to be one of those hot older guys, otherwise power on the fast track to wrecked-face-ville, by all means).

Anyone else who wants to use this can and should as well because it’s super affordable $9 USD so even the cheapest bargain hunter scrooges of the world can spring for one!  Aside from that, it works really well and your skin will certainly thank you.

Go Green with EkoMiko Luxury Intimate Massage Candles!

I was contacted by the very gracious Bradley from EkoMiko Candles about doing a review on these and, at first, I was a little hesitant. After all, it’s an intimate massage candle so I didn’t know how up my alley that would be, but I am very glad I decided to give it a go and was able to receive this lovely candle with an impressive message!

First off, it’s seriously so much more than just a luxury candle.

It’s made of 100% natural coconut butter wax and other natural, organic and eco certified ingredients to nourish and feed your skin for massage or as a hand / body balm.

Check here to read more about the ingredients.

The candle wax is a lot softer than your typical candle. Actually, it feels more like a body balm than a candle. I used a bit to moisturize my hands and it worked really well, whether the candle was lit or not. The candle I received, EkoHeroine, has a very feminine floral scent that is really nice and uplifting. They also have EkoHero, a scent that seems to be aimed more toward men and/or as a night time scent, that I received a small sample of and which is much more musky and masculine (obviously) than the EkoHeroine scent. I actually prefer the EkoHero scent, to be honest, but they are both really well-scented nonetheless.

The box packaging itself is seeded, meaning it can be planted directly into the ground and wild flowers will grow from it!

How cool is that?!

As if that wasn’t enough, the jar is made of recycled wine bottles, with a thin wood wick, and something I’ve never heard of before; the leaflets that come with this candle are made not from paper, but stone! It’s pretty shocking when you actually get to feel the little fold out leaflets because they are really glossy and very soft. Nothing about it says stone at all. Technology has come a LONG way if this is what they can make with stone!

That’s right; ^ this paper is made from stone!

Crazy, right? I thought so too!

I really love the overall message of this product. It really seems to promote a healthier, greener, more earth-friendly lifestyle and I love that. I only used this once for massage, much to my boyfriend’s displeasure, and only for his hands, but I felt the effect was really nice. I feel like this is literally a body balm in candle form. The fact that it’s meant for couples’ type massage is really awesome, but I love that the massage itself helps your skin soak up the impressive ingredients and the scent allows for a totally relaxing experience.

Although I think that $59 USD is extremely steep for any kind of candle, I do feel that this candle certainly offers more than your typical candle in every aspect. It’s truly an all-inclusive earth friendly product that I really love with a scent I will continue to enjoy during bath time and relaxing evenings at home without worry of inhaling unfriendly chemicals, damaging the ozone, endangering plants or chopping down many trees.

The price truly is the only drawback to this candle…other than their really awkward demo video which I can’t wrap my head around; it just seems bizarre, creepy (especially the staring bit), and a bit ludicrous that a woman would be like that in any situation, ever, and I really hope it’s supposed to be funny. Otherwise, if you are marketing to women, I just don’t really get it. (sorry! Lol. It made me giggle, but then maybe I’m just immature like that.)

I feel like a demo video would be better served if you highlighted the incredible nature that is encompassed in this product as opposed to random chick moisturizing in a suggestive way because, in my opinion, that only works for adult and lingerie type retail sites. I get that it’s an intimate massage candle, but it just seemed a bit off point to me.

Okay, rant over and out!

Anyway, that aside, I do love the candle and the incredible feat they have achieved with their completely green, packaging and paper included, luxury massage candles that are definitely worth checking out.
