Welcome to my first ever book review!
This book was originally loaned to me by a friend who had been raving about it for a month or so before she finally convinced me to give it a read and I am so glad that I did!
First off, picture a society similar to Hunger Games (only not), but better.
Veronica Roth’s Divergent is Hunger Games if it was more thought out, better written, just a realistic, and deadlier, if that is possible, which is pretty incredible when you consider it’s her debut novel!
First off, the book takes place in what we assume is post world war type Chicago. In this society, there are 5 main factions each dedicated to a specific virtue – Abnegation (selfless seekers), Amity (peace-seeking), Erudite (knowledge-seekers), Candor (truth seekers), and Dauntless (thrill seekers). At age 16, everyone takes an aptitude test which determines what faction they are best suited towards and then they must choose which faction they want to join. Some stay in the faction they were born into while others transfer to a new one, often leaving their families behind forever. Beatrice, our main protagonist, is born into the life of Abnegation, but she has doubts about belonging in a faction dedicated to selflessness when she never feels good enough. When she takes her aptitude test and results come back inconclusive, she is told that she is Divergent and may never tell anyone or she faces certain death. Then, she is faced with a challenge that may change her life forever – stay with Abnegation or transfer to another faction?
I am really enjoying this series at the moment, currently re-reading the second book Insurgent, and I think anyone who enjoyed Hunger Games, The Mortal Instruments, Uglies series, Infernal Devices or any kind of science fiction types will like this series. I definitely recommend it!
