Best Organic Oils For Your Skin Type

Many people have a lot of misconceptions about using oil on their face or even their body.

Whether you have acne, sensitive skin or just hate the oily feeling, a lot of people have had their own bad experiences with oils.

What many people don’t know is that often times, oil in mainstream skincare doesn’t even use natural vegetable and fruit oils (or very little of it), but instead opts for cheap mineral oil (a bi-product of crude oil) which is terrible for your skin. It sits on your face, seals off your pores (hence clogging them), and causes a lot of skin irritations. Mineral oil is a big reason a lot of people have come to shudder at the thought of using oil on their face. Another reason is that many people aren’t familiar with the functions of different types of fruit and vegetable oils and may be using the incorrect oils for their skin type. After all, all oils are NOT created equal; some are heavier while others are lighter. The following are a few of my favorite types of oil for each skin type and some that will work for any.

  • Organic Grapeseed Oil: Grapseed oil is great for all skin types. Very similar to human sebum, it works well for oily and sensitive skin especially as it sinks directly into your skin and leaves no greasy feel. This oil works well for those who don’t like that oily feeling on their face. This oil is high in vitamin E and linoleic acid and is known to work well in the aid of healing damaged skin, soothing eczema, dry skin and can be used under the eyes. It has a very light consistency and little to no scent.
  • Organic Raspberry Seed Oil: Known for its high percentage of fatty acid content, raspberry seed oil is great for those with aging, dry, mature or sun damaged skin. Fatty acids, if you are unfamiliar, are great protein building blocks for the skin and can help to healing any damage to your skin’s moisture barrier. This is a heavier oil so it should be used more for drier skin types or otherwise used very sparingly on oilier skin types. It has been shown to be useful in soothing eczema and dry skin and is high in vitamins A and E. Some studies have also shown it to be a valuable SPF as it may be useful in protection from UVA and UVB rays. It is used in many sunscreens/sunblocks for this reason. This oil is darker in color and is a heavier oil with an herbal scent that you wouldn’t expect from raspberries. A little bit goes a long way.
  • Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil: This is one of my favorite oils! I love olive oil for both it’s health properties as well as it’s topical benefits. EVOO is great for all skin types and is touted as one of the natural oils that most closely resembles human sebum (human oils) so it is therefore readily accepted and absorbed by the skin. It is an excellent cleansing oil and facial moisturizer. It can also help to soothe razor burn, skin irritations, and dry skin. It has a large range of antioxidants and fatty acid proteins to help rebuild and protect the skin from free radicals. It has also been known to, in some degree, work as a natural sunscreen. *This is based on a scientific study done, but you should STILL wear proper sunscreen/sunblock with a good percentage of zinc oxide in order to truly protect yourself!*
  • Organic Neem Oil: A lesser known oil, neem oil is great for acne and other skin irritations. It has been shown to relieve itching skin irritations, fungus, redness and infection due to its high antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies also show it soothing dry or damaged skin and also lightening scars and hyper-pigmentation.  If you are not keen on herbal smells though, I recommend you just use a product that includes neem as this oil has a particularly distinct scent. It also has a pretty thick viscosity so a little goes a long way and it will last you a long time. 
  • Organic Evening Primrose Oil: Another great natural oil, evening primrose oil is often used in anti-aging skin care lines for it’s high GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) content, which is known to be useful in rebuilding damaged skin cells and calming inflammation. It also has a high moisture property making it useful against dry skin conditions and other irritations such as rosacea, acne, and atopic dermatitis. It has shown to be useful in clearing skin rashes and irritations and is known to help clear clogged pores. The thickness of this oil is somewhere between the lightness of  grapeseed and the heavier feel of raspberry seed oil. It doesn’t feel heavy on the skin, but would likely work well for drier skin types, combination skin types, and oily and acneic skin in small amounts. 
  • Organic Rosehip Oil: Due to its high vitamin A (retinoic acid) content, rosehip oil has been shown to help immensely with skin cell  turnover and regeneration. This has been shown in studies to improve many skin concerns such as blemishes, scarring, hyper-pigmentation, and wrinkles. It also helps to soften skin texture and condition the skin overall. It’s texture may be suited to any skin type in moderation, but will be most suited to drier skin types.
  • Organic Coconut Oil: Coconut oil is often touted for its many health benefits, but little is mentioned of its skin care benefits. It can be applied as a natural moisturizer or skin cleansing oil and has been shown to be very effective at treating acne. Many brands use coconut oil derivatives in their anti-aging skin care lines to help moisturize mature skin. This oil is a liquid when heated (does not need much heat and has a high burning point so you wont destroy it’s nutrient content if lightly warmed ), but hardens in the cold. It melts on skin contact and is easily absorbed into the skin. The only thing with coconut oil is that is can be very oily feeling so a LITTLE bit goes a very long way. A small 1 oz. tube of it will last you months. It can also be very runny once it has melted, but it is also much lighter once melted. Use sparingly as too much can definitely make you feel oily. Uses show it as being good for all skin types, but it depends on your preference as some may find this too oily for their taste while others love the moisture or find it clears their acne breakouts.
Other Beneficial Oils: Sunflower Seed Oil, Castor Seed Oil, Pomegranate Seed Oil (pricey!), Cherry Seed Oil, Strawberry Seed Oil, Tomato Seed Oil, and much more.
All in all, there are some great natural skin benefits to be gained from the daily use of natural fruit and vegetable oils. They are known to offer some of the same benefits to your skin as mainstream products, but without the side effects and preservatives. Though the idea of putting oil on your face may make you cringe, you might want to reconsider in lieu of what these oils can offer your skin.

      yeah I’ve been hearing a lot about Pai lately. I hadn’t previously as I think they might be based in the UK and I’m in the US, but I did check out their site the other day and it seems like a really nice line!
